It depends on the reason. Crowns, fillings and veneers that repair a broken, decayed or badly damaged tooth are treatment and are allowed. Filing down healthy teeth just to get a fashionable smile or a "perfect" gap is what most scholars say the hadith forbids. Cosmetic veneers on healthy teeth are a grey area, so ask a scholar about your case.

The hadith about teeth

Abdullah ibn Mas'ud reported that Allah has cursed women who "create a space between their teeth artificially to look beautiful" and "such women as change the features created by Allah" (Sahih al-Bukhari 5931). The hadith speaks about women, and scholars apply the principle to men too.

The key ideas are "artificially", "to look beautiful" and a change to the natural form. Repair work and medical work don't fit that description. For the wider topic, see Is plastic surgery haram?

What is clearly allowed

  • Fillings, crowns and caps that repair decay or a broken tooth.
  • Smoothing a sharp or chipped edge that cuts your tongue or cheek.
  • Bonding or a veneer on a tooth that is cracked, worn down or badly discoloured by medication or injury.
  • Replacing a missing tooth with an implant or bridge.

The Prophet ﷺ told Arfajah, who lost his nose in battle, to replace his silver nose with a gold one (Sunan Abi Dawud 4232). Restoring what was lost was welcomed. Islam also encourages treating problems, since "Allah has not made a disease without appointing a remedy for it" (Sunan Abi Dawud 3855).

What most scholars avoid

  • Filing healthy teeth to create gaps or a trendy "pointed" look.
  • Veneers on healthy, normal teeth only for a "Hollywood smile". Veneers usually need a layer of healthy enamel shaved away, and that can't be undone. Many contemporary scholars call this a change for beauty alone and advise against it.
  • Adding gems or decorative caps purely for style.

Some scholars are more flexible when the teeth are noticeably crooked, uneven or stained and cause real distress, because they treat that as a defect. Others stay strict unless there is a health need. Both views exist, so the safest path is to ask a trusted scholar with the details, and tell your dentist you want the least invasive option.

Two small points

  • Gold: gold jewellery is not for men, so choose porcelain or ceramic crowns where you have a choice. Gold used for a real dental need is treated more leniently.
  • Wudu: crowns and veneers are fixed in place and don't affect wudu or ghusl.

If you've already had veneers or filing done, you don't need to panic or have them removed. Ask a scholar if you're unsure, stop anything you're doing for pure vanity going forward, and ask Allah for forgiveness. If your concern is only stains, whitening is a gentler option. Key points
  • Repairing damaged teeth is treatment and is allowed.
  • Filing healthy teeth for beauty is what the hadith warns against (Sahih al-Bukhari 5931).
  • Cosmetic veneers on healthy teeth are a grey area, and many scholars advise against them.
  • Ask for the least invasive option and consult a scholar.
Tip: When a dentist suggests veneers, ask: "Is there a treatment that doesn't remove healthy enamel?" Whitening, bonding or aligners often give a similar result.
