Are most people in hell women?

A well-known hadith says the Prophet ﷺ was shown the Fire and saw that most of its people were women, but it is a warning about specific behavior, not a statement that women are worse. Women and men are judged by exactly the same standard, and women can reach the highest levels of Jannah.

What the hadith actually says

The Prophet ﷺ said he was shown the Fire and most of its dwellers were women who were ungrateful. He was asked, "Are they ungrateful to Allah?" He explained they were ungrateful to their husbands and to kindness shown to them: if you are good to one of them for a lifetime and she sees one thing she dislikes, she says she never saw any good from you (Sahih al-Bukhari 29).

In an Eid sermon he told the women to give charity for this reason, and they immediately began donating their jewelry (Sahih al-Bukhari 304, 98). The point was practical: here is a common trap, and here is the cure.

A warning, not a verdict

  • It is about deeds. The hadith names a habit (ingratitude, harsh words), not womanhood. A man with the same habits has the same problem.
  • It came with a solution. Charity, gratitude and kind speech.
  • Context of numbers. Scholars note that there may simply be more women than men overall, and another authentic hadith says each man in Jannah will have two wives from humanity, which means women will also be a large share of Paradise.
  • Men got warnings too. Many hadith warn about pride, injustice and abusing power, sins that are often linked to men.

Equal reward for women and men

The Quran is very clear that salvation does not depend on gender:

وَمَن يَعْمَلْ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ مِن ذَكَرٍ أَوْ أُنثَىٰ وَهُوَ مُؤْمِنٌ فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ يَدْخُلُونَ ٱلْجَنَّةَ وَلَا يُظْلَمُونَ نَقِيرًا "And whoever does righteous deeds, whether male or female, while being a believer, those will enter Paradise and will not be wronged even as much as the speck on a date seed." Quran 4:124

Maryam, Khadijah, Fatimah and Asiyah are described as among the best people who ever lived. See What will women get in Jannah?

How to read hadith like this

Many converts first meet this hadith on social media, stripped of context. Read it the way the Companions did: as a sincere warning from someone who wanted them saved. They didn't argue or despair; they gave charity. And remember that nobody is in Hell because of their gender, only through deeds that Allah did not forgive. See Do Muslims go to hell for their sins?

Key points
  • The hadith is authentic (Sahih al-Bukhari 29).
  • It warns about ingratitude and harsh words, not about being female.
  • Men and women are rewarded equally (Quran 4:124).
  • Women will also be a large share of the people of Jannah.
Tip: Turn the hadith into a habit: say "thank you" often, to people and to Allah, and give a little charity each week. Gratitude is the exact medicine the Prophet ﷺ prescribed. See What is Jannah?
