At what age should Muslim kids start praying?

Usually around the age of seven. The Prophet ﷺ taught parents to encourage their children to pray from seven years old. Before that, children can watch and join in for fun. Prayer only becomes obligatory when a child reaches puberty. The aim at every age is love and habit, not pressure.

What the Prophet ﷺ taught

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Command your children to pray when they become seven years old, and beat them for it when they become ten years old; and arrange their beds separately" (Sunan Abi Dawud 495).

Scholars understand this as a gradual process: encouragement at seven, firmer reminders by ten, as training for the day prayer becomes a duty. The word "beat" has been explained by scholars as, at most, a light discipline that never causes harm. Many parents and scholars today stress gentler tools first, like praise, routine and example. In many Western countries physical discipline of children can also be illegal, so mercy and encouragement come first.

Before seven

Nothing is expected from toddlers and preschoolers, but they learn by watching. Let them stand next to you on the prayer mat, copy your movements and hear the adhan. Keep it playful. A small prayer mat of their own can make them feel part of it. See How do I teach my kids to pray?

The Quran also tells believers to call their families to prayer and be steady in it:

وَأْمُرْ أَهْلَكَ بِٱلصَّلَوٰةِ وَٱصْطَبِرْ عَلَيْهَا "Bid your people to pray, and be diligent in observing it." Quran 20:132

From seven to puberty

  • Start small: one or two prayers a day, such as Maghrib with the family, then add more.
  • Teach wudu: make it a hands-on skill. See How do I teach my kids to make wudu?
  • Pray together: children copy what they see their parents do.
  • Praise effort: small rewards and kind words work better than fear.
  • Be patient: missing a prayer at this age is not a sin for the child.

When does it become compulsory?

A child is not held accountable until puberty. The Prophet ﷺ said that three people have no record kept for them, including a child until he reaches puberty (Sunan Abi Dawud 4403). So the training years are about building love for prayer, so that by the time it is required, it already feels normal. Puberty may arrive at different ages, so look at your own child. Teenagers sometimes stop praying even if they prayed as children. Stay calm and keep the relationship warm. See What if my teenager stops praying?

Key points
  • Encourage prayer from around seven (Sunan Abi Dawud 495).
  • Younger children can join in playfully with no pressure.
  • Prayer becomes obligatory at puberty, not before.
  • Use gentle methods: example, praise and routine.
Tip: Pick one prayer your family can do together every day, such as Maghrib or Isha, and make it a happy time with a snack or story afterwards. Children remember the warm feeling long after the details.
