Can a mosque be built with a mortgage?

No, a mosque should not be built or bought with a conventional interest-based mortgage, according to the clear majority of scholars. Interest (riba) is forbidden, and a good cause doesn't make it allowed. Communities use halal alternatives instead: donations, interest-free loans, and Islamic finance structures like ijara or murabaha.

Why an interest mortgage is a problem

Riba is one of the clearest prohibitions in Islam. The Prophet ﷺ cursed the one who consumes riba, the one who pays it, the one who writes it down and the two witnesses, and said they are all the same (Sahih Muslim 1598). A mosque committee that signs an interest loan is the one paying riba, so the same rule applies.

وَأَحَلَّ ٱللَّهُ ٱلْبَيْعَ وَحَرَّمَ ٱلرِّبَوٰا۟ "But Allah has permitted trade and has forbidden interest." Quran 2:275

A house of Allah built on what is pure

The Prophet ﷺ said, "Allah is good and accepts only what is good" (Sahih Muslim 1015). The Quran also praises a mosque founded on piety from its first day:

لَّمَسْجِدٌ أُسِّسَ عَلَى ٱلتَّقْوَىٰ مِنْ أَوَّلِ يَوْمٍ أَحَقُّ أَن تَقُومَ فِيهِ "A mosque founded on righteousness from the first day is more worthy for you to stand in." Quran 9:108

Halal ways communities fund mosques

  • Donations and pledges: the classic way, often with a "buy a brick" or "sponsor a square foot" campaign. Whoever builds a mosque for Allah, Allah builds a house for him in Paradise (Sahih al-Bukhari 450).
  • Qard hasan: members lend the mosque money interest-free and are repaid over time.
  • Islamic finance: a Sharia-compliant bank buys the property and the mosque buys it back in installments (murabaha) or rents it while buying shares (ijara or diminishing musharaka). See How does an Islamic mortgage work?
  • Renting first: many communities start in a rented hall and buy later.

What if my mosque already has one?

Praying in that mosque is still valid; the building is a place of prayer either way. The sin is on those who chose the loan, not on the worshippers. If you're involved in the committee, push gently for refinancing with an Islamic provider or a fundraising drive to pay it off early. Giving to help clear the debt is a good deed; you can read about using zakat for mosques in Can I give zakat to a mosque?

Key points
  • Conventional interest mortgages for mosques are not allowed by most scholars.
  • A good cause doesn't make riba halal (Sahih Muslim 1598).
  • Donations, qard hasan and Islamic finance are halal options.
  • Prayers in a mosque with a mortgage are still valid.
Tip: If your community is planning a new building, ask the committee early whether they've spoken to an Islamic finance provider. A sensible plan at the start is much easier than refinancing later.
