Can a Muslim marry an atheist?
No. A Muslim man or woman cannot marry an atheist. The Quran allows a Muslim man to marry a chaste Christian or Jewish woman, but not someone with no revealed religion, and a Muslim woman cannot marry any non-Muslim man. If your partner is an atheist, the honest path is for them to explore Islam freely, never to pretend.
What the Quran allows
The Quran sets a general rule against marrying those who reject faith in God, then gives one exception for Muslim men:
The exception covers women from the People of the Book (Christians and Jews). An atheist belongs to neither group, so the general rule applies: "Do not marry polytheistic women until they believe" (Quran 2:221). Scholars apply the same reasoning to atheists. There is no exception for a Muslim woman marrying a non-Muslim man. See What does Islam say about atheists?
If your partner is an atheist
As a convert, you may already be in a relationship with an atheist. The options are:
- They explore Islam sincerely. Share what you've learned, answer questions and let them decide in their own time. The Quran says "Let there be no compulsion in religion" (Quran 2:256).
- If they don't accept Islam, marriage isn't possible, and a romantic relationship outside marriage isn't allowed either. This is painful, but kindness and honesty are better than leading them on.
- If you're already legally married, don't panic or rush into a divorce. Scholars have different views on what happens when one spouse becomes Muslim, so speak to a trusted imam promptly.
Please don't convert just to marry
Islam requires sincere belief. Saying the shahada only to make a wedding possible isn't a sound foundation for either faith or marriage, and a partner who "converts" for you may drift away later. Many imams will talk with someone at length before a nikah to check that their faith is real. See Can I become Muslim just to marry someone?
Stay kind to the person you love
Accepting Islam's limits doesn't mean looking down on your partner. The Quran tells believers to call to Allah "with wisdom and kind advice" (Quran 16:125). Many converts stay good friends with former partners and find that gentleness opens more hearts than arguments. - Invite your partner to explore Islam, but never pressure or deceive them.
- If you're already married, ask an imam for guidance and don't rush.
