Yes, a wife can give small, customary amounts of charity from household money, and both she and her husband are rewarded. For larger sums from his money she should have his permission, either spoken or clearly understood. Her own money is hers to give freely.

Everyday giving from the household

The Prophet ﷺ said that when a woman gives in charity from the food of her house without causing waste, she gets the reward for giving, her husband gets the reward for earning it, and the storekeeper gets a reward too, without anyone's reward being reduced (Sahih al-Bukhari 1425). So handing a neighbour some food, giving a few coins to someone at the door, or dropping a small amount in the mosque box is normally fine. Most husbands are happy with this, and it's what scholars call customary permission.

Bigger amounts need his agreement

A husband's salary is his property, even when it's used for the whole family. The Prophet ﷺ said that whatever a wife spends from her husband's earnings without his order, half the reward goes to him (Sahih al-Bukhari 5195). Scholars explain this as general household spending he'd accept, not large gifts he'd object to. If you want to sponsor an orphan monthly or send a big sum abroad from his account, talk to him first.

  • Small and normal: generally fine without asking each time.
  • Large or regular commitments: get his permission.
  • He has clearly said no: respect that for his money, and give from your own instead.

Her own money is fully hers

In Islam a wife's salary, inheritance, mahr and savings belong to her alone. She doesn't need anyone's permission to give from them, and her husband must still provide for her.

لِّلرِّجَالِ نَصِيبٌ مِّمَّا ٱكْتَسَبُوا۟ ۖ وَلِلنِّسَآءِ نَصِيبٌ مِّمَّا ٱكْتَسَبْنَ "For men is a share of what they have earned, and for women is a share of what they have earned." Quran 4:32

Zaynab, the wife of Ibn Mas'ud, asked whether she could give her own charity to her husband and the orphans in her care, and the Prophet ﷺ said she would get two rewards: for charity and for kinship (Sahih al-Bukhari 1466). If he is stingy

When Hind complained that her husband didn't give enough for her and her child, the Prophet ﷺ told her to take what was reasonably sufficient for them (Sahih al-Bukhari 5364). That covers basic needs, not secret donations. If you feel he is too tight, talk kindly, and remember that charity also includes kindness and service. See Is a smile really charity in Islam?

Key points
  • Small, customary charity from household money is allowed and rewarded for both spouses.
  • Larger gifts from the husband's money need his permission.
  • A wife's own income and savings are hers to give freely.
  • Talking openly about giving prevents resentment in the marriage.
Tip: Agree on a small monthly "charity pot" together. It removes doubt about permission and turns giving into something you share as a couple.
