Can a woman do Umrah without a mahram?

It depends on the school you follow. Hanafi and Hanbali scholars generally require a mahram (a close male relative or husband) for the journey. Many Shafi'i and Maliki scholars allow a woman to do her obligatory pilgrimage with a safe, trustworthy group instead, and many contemporary scholars accept this today. Saudi rules have also relaxed, so check the current Nusuk/Saudi rules before booking.
What the hadith say
The Prophet ﷺ said it is not permissible for a woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day to travel for one day and night except with a mahram (Sahih al-Bukhari 1088). When a man said his wife was leaving for Hajj while he had signed up for an army, the Prophet ﷺ told him: "Go along with her" (Sahih al-Bukhari 1862).
At the same time, he told Adi ibn Hatim that a day would come when a woman would travel alone from al-Hira to Mecca and do tawaf of the Kaaba, "fearing none but Allah" (Sahih al-Bukhari 3595). Scholars who allow travel without a mahram in safe conditions point to this, and to Umar allowing the Prophet's wives to go on Hajj with Uthman and Abdur-Rahman ibn Awf as escorts (Sahih al-Bukhari 1860).

How the four schools see it
- Hanafi: a woman needs a mahram or her husband for any journey of travel distance, including Hajj and Umrah. Without one, she isn't yet obliged to go.
- Hanbali: the mahram is a condition for Hajj and Umrah, in the well-known view of the school.
- Shafi'i: for the obligatory pilgrimage (which, for Shafi'is, includes a first Umrah), a group of trustworthy women is enough when the route is safe. A voluntary, repeat Umrah usually still needs a mahram, though some Shafi'i scholars are more lenient.
- Maliki: for the obligatory Hajj, a safe and reliable travel company (rufqah ma'munah) can replace a mahram. Voluntary trips need a mahram.
Many scholars today, looking at organized flights, licensed agents and group travel, lean toward the safety-based view for women joining a reputable Umrah group. Others prefer the stricter position. Both are held by sincere scholars, so follow the scholar or school you trust.
What about converts?
Many convert women have no Muslim male relatives at all, and a non-Muslim father or brother can't enter Mecca. That situation is exactly why the group-travel view matters to so many sisters. Talk with your local imam, and if you're married, your husband can go with you. This mirrors the questions convert women face in marriage too. Practical safety
Whichever view you follow, choose a licensed Umrah operator with other women in the group, share your itinerary with family, and keep your phone charged. Saudi authorities have allowed adult women to do Umrah without a mahram in recent years, but rules can change, so check the current Nusuk/Saudi rules first.
