Can the dead hear us in Islam?

It depends on what you mean, and scholars differ. Authentic hadith show the dead can hear some things, such as footsteps after burial and the greeting of visitors, as Allah wills. But they can't respond, help us or answer our requests, so Muslims never call on the dead for help.

What the hadith say

Several authentic reports show that the dead have some awareness:

  • Footsteps. The Prophet ﷺ said that when a person is buried and their companions walk away, the dead person hears the sound of their shoes (Sahih al-Bukhari 1338).
  • The Battle of Badr. After the battle, the Prophet ﷺ addressed the dead enemy leaders thrown into a well. When Umar asked how he could speak to lifeless bodies, he said, "You do not hear what I say better than they do" (Sahih al-Bukhari 3976).
  • The greeting at graves. He taught us to greet the people of the graves directly, "Peace be upon you, O dwellers of these homes" (Sahih Muslim 975). See What do I say when I pass a graveyard?

What the Quran says

إِنَّكَ لَا تُسْمِعُ ٱلْمَوْتَىٰ "Indeed, you will not make the dead hear." Quran 27:80

Aisha understood verses like this to mean the dead don't hear, and she read the Badr report as the dead "knowing" rather than hearing. Many other scholars explain the verse as a metaphor: the stubborn disbelievers are like the dead because they refuse to listen. Another verse says, "Allah causes to hear whom He wills" (Quran 35:22).

Where scholars land

Most scholars accept that the dead hear what authentic texts mention, like footsteps and the salam, because Allah makes them hear. Others, following Aisha's view, are more cautious and limit it. Both sides agree on the important part: the dead can't help the living, can't answer requests, and calling on them instead of Allah is not allowed. What reaches them is our dua for them and charity on their behalf.

What this means at a grave

When you visit a loved one's grave, greet them with salam, remember death, and make dua to Allah for their forgiveness. You don't need special recitations or long speeches at the graveside. See Do I have to read Surah Yasin for the dead? Talking to Allah about them is better than talking to them.

Key points
  • Authentic hadith say the dead hear footsteps and greetings, as Allah wills.
  • Aisha and some scholars held a narrower view.
  • The dead can't help us or answer requests; we ask only Allah.
  • Our dua and charity for them do reach them.
Tip: If you miss someone who has passed away, turn that feeling into a short dua: "O Allah, forgive them, have mercy on them and make their grave spacious." It's the best gift you can still send.
