Yes, you can. A Christmas bonus is part of your pay or a gift from your employer, and it's halal as long as your job is halal. The name on the bonus doesn't change that. Just politely decline anything that isn't halal itself, such as a bottle of wine or a ham.

Why it's halal

Many companies pay a year-end bonus in December, sometimes called a "Christmas bonus" or "13th month" salary. It's a reward for work you've done all year. Islam values paying workers fully and on time: the Prophet ﷺ said, "Give the worker his wages before his sweat dries" (Sunan Ibn Majah 2443). Accepting what you've earned isn't celebrating anything.

If the bonus is a gift rather than part of your contract, that's fine too. The Prophet ﷺ "used to accept gifts and used to give something in return" (Sahih al-Bukhari 2585), and he accepted a gift from a Christian ruler (Sahih al-Bukhari 2616).

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا تَأْكُلُوٓا۟ أَمْوَٰلَكُم بَيْنَكُم بِٱلْبَٰطِلِ إِلَّآ أَن تَكُونَ تِجَٰرَةً عَن تَرَاضٍۢ مِّنكُمْ "O you who have believed, do not consume one another's wealth unjustly but only [in lawful] business by mutual consent." Quran 4:29

Common workplace gifts

  • Cash or a paycheck bonus: halal.
  • Gift cards and vouchers: halal. Use them for halal things.
  • Food hampers: keep the halal items. Check sweets for gelatin and alcohol.
  • Wine, beer or spirits: don't accept them. You can't drink them, and you shouldn't pass them on or sell them either.
  • Ham or pork products: decline those as well.
  • Office Secret Santa: scholars differ on joining a holiday gift game. Some allow it as workplace friendliness; others prefer you sit it out. For more on gifts, see Can I still exchange Christmas gifts with my family as a Muslim?

How to decline kindly

Most employers just don't know. A short, friendly word is enough: "Thank you so much for thinking of me. I don't drink for religious reasons, so could I swap the wine for something else, or simply skip it?" Many HR teams are happy to offer chocolate, a gift card or a donation instead, and it may help other Muslim colleagues in future years.

Say thank you warmly, even for a gift you can't keep. Gratitude and good manners at work are part of your faith. For holiday greetings, see Can I say "Merry Christmas" to my coworkers?

Spending it well

A bonus is a blessing from Allah through your employer. Pay off debts, support your family, save for the future, and set some aside for charity. If you have savings above the nisab, remember it may count toward your zakat. For ideas on giving in December, see Can I give to charity at Christmas as a Muslim?

Key points
  • A Christmas bonus is halal pay if your job is halal.
  • Gift cards and halal food gifts are fine.
  • Politely decline alcohol and pork gifts.
  • Use part of the bonus for charity and family.
Tip: Let HR know early in the year that you don't drink. That way your name is on the "non-alcohol" list before holiday hampers are ordered.
