Can I ask my school to use my new Muslim name?

Yes, you can ask your school or university to use your new Muslim name. Most institutions in the UK, Europe and the USA let students record a "preferred" or "known as" name without a legal change. Remember, though, that changing your name isn't required in Islam unless your old name has a bad meaning.
Do you need a new name at all?
Many converts keep their birth name, and that's completely fine. The Companions mostly kept their names after accepting Islam. The Prophet ﷺ changed only names with a bad or un-Islamic meaning, such as names that mean "servant" of something other than Allah, or names with negative meanings. See Do I have to change my name after becoming Muslim? If you choose a new name because you love its meaning, that's a personal choice, and it's natural to want people to use it.
How to ask your school
- Pupils at school: a parent or guardian usually needs to contact the school office. If your parents aren't on board yet, speak to a teacher or pastoral lead you trust.
- College and university: most student records systems have a "preferred name" field you can update online, or student services can do it for you.
- Teachers and lecturers: a short email works: "I now go by Yusuf. Please could you use this name in class?"
- Official documents: certificates and exam boards often require your legal name. Ask what will appear on them.
Legal name vs. used name
In most Western countries you can use a different name day to day without a legal change. A legal change (a deed poll in the UK, a court order in many US states) is only needed if you want it on passports and degree certificates. Many converts start with a "known as" name and decide on the legal step later.
When people slip up
Friends and teachers will forget at first. Correct them gently and kindly; that's part of good manners. At the same time, Islam asks people not to use names others dislike:
If someone keeps refusing on purpose to mock you, that's a school behaviour issue you can report. See How do I tell my classmates I became Muslim?
- A new name is optional in Islam, but you may use one.
- Schools usually accept a preferred name without legal paperwork.
- Exam certificates may still need your legal name.
- Correct people gently while they get used to it.
