Yes, you can usually be there, but don't join in the prayer itself. Being present in an assembly is not the same as worshipping. You can stand or sit quietly and respectfully while others pray, without saying the words, singing hymns that call Jesus God, or saying "Amen." If the assembly is mainly an act of worship, many schools let you step out.

Being present isn't the same as praying

School assemblies mix lots of things: announcements, awards, a short talk, and in some schools a prayer or hymn. Most of that is ordinary school life. The only part that needs care is the act of worship itself.

  • Stay respectful: stand or sit quietly like everyone else. There's no need to make a statement or walk out mid-prayer.
  • Don't recite or say "Amen": keep silent during prayers addressed to Jesus or the Trinity.
  • Use the moment: quietly make your own du'a or dhikr, such as "SubhanAllah" or "Alhamdulillah," in your heart.

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Anybody who believes in Allah and the Last Day... should talk what is good or keep quiet" (Sahih al-Bukhari 6018). Silence is a perfectly good answer here.

What about hymns and the Lord's Prayer?

Many hymns praise God in ways a Muslim can agree with, like thanking Him for creation. Others call Jesus "Lord" or "Son of God," which Islam doesn't accept. Some scholars allow joining general lines about God's greatness, while others advise staying silent for the whole hymn to keep things simple. The Lord's Prayer addresses God as "Father," which Muslims don't do, so it's best to stay quiet during it.

Can I opt out?

Often, yes, and you don't need to feel awkward asking.

  • England and Wales: schools are required to hold collective worship, but parents can withdraw their children, and sixth-form students can usually withdraw themselves.
  • United States: public schools generally can't lead official prayers, so this mostly comes up in private or religious schools, which set their own rules.
  • Elsewhere in Europe: rules vary a lot, from strictly secular public schools in France to religious schools elsewhere. Ask the school directly.

If you'd rather stay with your friends than leave, quietly sitting through is also fine. Choose what works for you. See Can I go to a Catholic school as a Muslim?

Handling it with grace

Your classmates and teachers aren't trying to trap you. Responding calmly and kindly speaks well of Islam. Allah encourages good relations with people who live peacefully alongside us:

لَّا يَنْهَىٰكُمُ ٱللَّهُ عَنِ ٱلَّذِينَ لَمْ يُقَٰتِلُوكُمْ فِى ٱلدِّينِ وَلَمْ يُخْرِجُوكُم مِّن دِيَٰرِكُمْ أَن تَبَرُّوهُمْ وَتُقْسِطُوٓا۟ إِلَيْهِمْ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُحِبُّ ٱلْمُقْسِطِينَ "Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion and do not expel you from your homes - from being righteous toward them and acting justly toward them. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly." Quran 60:8

If someone asks why you're not singing, a simple answer works: "I'm Muslim, so I pray in my own way, but I'm happy to be here." See Do Muslims and Christians believe in the same God?

Key points
  • Attending an assembly is fine.
  • Don't recite Christian prayers, say "Amen," or sing lines calling Jesus God.
  • Stay quiet and respectful, and make your own du'a.
  • In many places you can ask to opt out of worship.
Tip: If you want to opt out, ask whether there's a quiet room or library you can use during the worship part. It's also a handy spot to pray Dhuhr later.
