Can I be a resident advisor in a dorm that allows alcohol?

It depends on the duties, but often yes. A resident advisor supports students, enforces housing rules and keeps people safe, and none of that means selling or serving alcohol. The problem would be duties that involve handling alcohol or hosting drinking events. Check the job description first and ask for adjustments where needed.
What the role actually involves
An RA is usually a senior student who looks after a floor or hall. Typical tasks include welcoming new students, running social events, handling noise and complaints, and responding to emergencies. In many halls alcohol is allowed for adults, and the RA's job is to enforce the policy and keep residents safe, not to supply drinks. Helping a drunk student get safe or calling for help is a good deed. The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever sees something abominable should change it with his hand, and if he cannot, then with his tongue, and if he cannot, then in his heart (Sahih Muslim 49). In an RA role, reporting problems and applying rules is the practical way to do that.
Where to be careful
The Quran sets a clear principle for cooperation:
The Prophet ﷺ also warned about alcohol's server, seller, buyer and carrier (Sunan Abi Dawud 3674). Apply that to your duties:
- Usually fine: mentoring, handling complaints, running alcohol-free events, helping unwell residents, reporting rule-breaking and following safety procedures.
- Needs care: staying in a room while people drink, being on duty at a party where alcohol is served, or taking confiscated bottles to storage.
- Best avoided: buying, serving or carrying alcohol, hosting events that include drinks or signing for alcohol deliveries.
Check each task against the principle. If you are unsure, ask your housing office what exactly would be expected, and ask a trusted imam about the grey areas. For living near alcohol more generally, see What if my roommate drinks alcohol?
Ask for adjustments
Housing teams are used to flexible arrangements. You can say politely: "I don't handle alcohol for religious reasons. I'd be glad to take on other duties instead." Possible adjustments include:
- Covering a different part of the rota, such as events or welfare, instead of party patrols.
- Leaving the handling of confiscated drinks to another staff member.
- Planning alcohol-free events, such as quiz nights, sports and film evenings.
- Choosing a quiet hall or substance-free floor, if one exists.
If a hall mixes men and women, ask about floor assignments, because the Prophet ﷺ said that no man should be alone with a woman who is not his mahram (Sahih Muslim 1341). See Can I live in mixed student housing as a Muslim?
Weigh the benefits
An RA role can be a way to show good character, support other Muslim students and make hall life safer. If the duties conflict too much, other jobs on campus may suit you better. See Can I work at the student union bar as a Muslim?
- An RA's duties are mostly support and safety, not serving alcohol.
- Avoid buying, serving, carrying or hosting alcohol (Sunan Abi Dawud 3674).
- Ask the housing office for duty adjustments, and ask an imam about grey areas.
- Think about mixed floors and being alone with the opposite gender.
