It depends on the play and the role you're given. Helping backstage or joining a non-religious winter show is very different from acting out the nativity as a religious story. Most scholars advise against playing roles or singing lines that express Christian beliefs, such as Jesus being the Son of God, but you can stay kind, involved and part of your class in other ways.

Nativity play or winter show?

"Christmas play" can mean very different things, so find out what's actually planned.

  • Nativity play: retells the Christmas story as Christians understand it, often with hymns that call Jesus "Lord" or "the Son of God." This is the part most scholars say a Muslim shouldn't act or sing in, because it voices beliefs Islam doesn't share.
  • Winter or holiday show: snowmen, reindeer, comedy sketches, general winter songs. Scholars differ here. Some see it as harmless school fun, while others prefer avoiding anything built around the festival.
  • Backstage roles: lights, sound, props, scenery, programs. Many Muslim families find this a comfortable middle ground, since you're helping your class without performing religious content.

Why it matters in Islam

Muslims love and honor Jesus (Isa) as one of the greatest prophets, and Mary (Maryam) has a whole chapter of the Quran named after her. The difference is that Islam teaches Jesus is a prophet, not God or God's son. Singing words of worship that say otherwise is more than just acting.

Islam also has its own festivals. When the Prophet ﷺ arrived in Medina and saw people celebrating two old feast days, he said Allah had replaced them with something better: Eid al-Adha and Eid al-Fitr (Sunan Abi Dawud 1134). Scholars also cite the hadith "He who copies any people is one of them" (Sunan Abi Dawud 4031), which they apply to religious rituals rather than everyday culture.

لَكُمْ دِينُكُمْ وَلِىَ دِينِ "For you is your religion, and for me is my religion." Quran 109:6

How to talk to your teacher

Teachers usually respond well when you ask early and offer to help. You could say:

  • "I'd love to be part of the show, but as a Muslim I don't sing or act out religious parts from other faiths. Could I do lights, props or a non-religious role?"
  • Parents can send a short email instead. Many schools in the UK, the US and Europe already have pupils who sit out nativity roles, so this is rarely a surprise.

For younger children, remember that kids aren't held accountable for sins before puberty (Sunan Abi Dawud 4403). A small child who has already been in a nativity play hasn't done anything wrong. Parents simply guide them gently for the future.

Staying part of the group

Saying no to one role doesn't mean shutting yourself off. You can still help build the set, cheer on your friends and enjoy the end-of-term atmosphere. Being kind and reliable is a great way to show what Islam looks like. See Can I say "Merry Christmas" to my coworkers? and Can I sing in the school choir as a Muslim?
