Yes, you can breastfeed in the mosque. Feeding your baby is a natural, rewarded act, and nothing forbids it there. Just keep yourself covered as you normally would, use the women's area or a mothers' room if there is one, and keep any spills off the prayer carpet.

Feeding your baby is an act of worship

The Quran speaks about breastfeeding with care and respect:

وَٱلْوَٰلِدَٰتُ يُرْضِعْنَ أَوْلَـٰدَهُنَّ حَوْلَيْنِ كَامِلَيْنِ "Mothers may breastfeed their children two complete years." Quran 2:233

Scholars teach that a mother who feeds her child with good intention is rewarded for it. The mosque isn't a place where caring for a baby is out of place. For how long Islam recommends nursing, see How long should a Muslim mother breastfeed?

Babies were in the Prophet's ﷺ mosque

Mothers brought infants to prayer in the Prophet's ﷺ time. He said, "I start the prayer intending to make it long, then I hear a baby crying, so I shorten it, because I know how hard it is for the mother" (Sahih al-Bukhari 707). He even carried his granddaughter Umamah while leading the prayer, putting her down when he prostrated (Sahih al-Bukhari 516). A mosque that welcomes babies is following his example. Practical etiquette

  • Modesty: your awrah rules still apply in front of men. In a women-only space, most mothers feel comfortable with a light cover or nursing top.
  • Where: the sisters' section, a mothers' room or a quiet corner is ideal. Avoid feeding right in a row while people are praying next to you.
  • Cleanliness: scholars differ on whether a baby's milky spit-up is impure, so to be safe use a muslin or burp cloth so the carpet stays clean.
  • During your own prayer: finish feeding first if you can. If your baby needs you mid-prayer, it's fine to hold them. See Can I hold my baby while praying?

If someone makes you feel unwelcome

Most mosques are happy to see families, but customs differ and now and then someone may comment. Stay calm, move to a more private spot if it helps, and mention it kindly to the sisters' committee afterwards. You could suggest a mothers' room or a few comfortable chairs. Many mosques in the UK, Europe and the USA have added these after mothers asked.

Key points
  • Breastfeeding in the mosque is allowed.
  • The Prophet ﷺ shortened prayers for crying babies.
  • Stay covered and use the women's area or a mothers' room.
  • Use a cloth so milk doesn't spill onto the prayer carpet.
Tip: Pack a small "mosque bag" with a nursing cover, burp cloth, wipes and a spare top for your baby. Feeding just before the prayer starts also helps your little one stay settled during the rak'ahs.
