Can I celebrate Eid if I'm in prison?

Yes, you can celebrate Eid in prison. Eid belongs to every Muslim, wherever they are. Many prisons in the UK, Europe and the USA let Muslim inmates pray the Eid prayer together and have a special meal, and whatever you can't do, Allah doesn't hold against you.
Eid is still yours
Being in prison doesn't cut you off from Allah or from the Muslim community. Eid is a day of thanks: for finishing Ramadan (Eid al-Fitr) or for the blessed days of Dhul Hijjah (Eid al-Adha). Whatever brought you there, you can still thank Allah, make dua and feel the joy of the day. Many people find their faith grows stronger inside, and Eid can be a real turning point.
What you can usually do
- Talk to the Muslim chaplain or imam early. Most prisons have one, and they often arrange the Eid prayer, a khutbah and sometimes a shared meal or special food.
- Pray the Eid prayer. If a congregation is allowed, join it. If not, many scholars allow you to pray two rakat on your own. See What if I miss the Eid prayer?
- Say the takbir. "Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, la ilaha illallah…" can be said quietly in your cell or out loud with others. See What is the Eid takbir and when do I say it?
- Small sunnahs. Have a wash, wear your cleanest clothes, eat something sweet before Eid al-Fitr, and greet other Muslims warmly.
When you can't do much
Sometimes there's a lockdown, no chaplain, or you're held alone. Don't feel your Eid "doesn't count". The Prophet ﷺ said that when a person is ill or travelling, Allah still writes for him the reward of the good deeds he used to do when healthy and at home (Sahih al-Bukhari 2996). Scholars take from this that when you are prevented from a good deed through no choice of your own, your sincere intention is still rewarded.
Staying connected to family
Use your phone or visit allowance around Eid if you can. A short call to say "Eid Mubarak" to your parents or children means a lot on both sides. If you feel low, that is understandable; talk to the chaplain or a trusted friend. See What if I feel lonely on Eid as a new Muslim?
- Muslims in prison can and should celebrate Eid as far as they are able.
- The Muslim chaplain is usually the person who organises the Eid prayer and meal.
- If you can't pray in congregation, you can still say the takbir and make dua.
- Allah rewards your intention for what you are prevented from doing.
