Yes, you can celebrate Eid over a video call with family abroad. Islam puts no rule on how you share the joy of Eid, and calling relatives who live far away is a beautiful way to keep family ties strong. Just make sure the call doesn't replace the parts of Eid that happen in person, like the Eid prayer.

Why a video call is a good deed

Keeping in touch with relatives (silat ar-rahim) is one of the most stressed duties in Islam. Allah tells us to be mindful of Him and of the ties of the womb. The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever wants his provision increased and his life extended should keep good ties with his relatives (Sahih al-Bukhari 5986). A long, happy call on Eid morning is a modern way of doing exactly that.

وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ ٱلَّذِى تَسَآءَلُونَ بِهِۦ وَٱلْأَرْحَامَ "And fear Allah, through whom you ask one another, and the wombs." Quran 4:1

This applies to your non-Muslim family too. Many converts have parents, siblings or grandparents in another country, and Eid is a lovely chance to show them that Islam made you kinder, not more distant. See Can I invite my non-Muslim family to Eid?

What you can share on the call

  • Greetings. Say "Eid Mubarak" or "Taqabbal Allahu minna wa minkum" (may Allah accept from us and from you).
  • A shared meal. Eat breakfast or lunch "together" across time zones, or cook the same dish.
  • Gifts and Eidi. Open presents on camera, or send money to the children ahead of time.
  • Dua. Make dua for each other out loud. It's a short, moving moment that people remember.

Keep the in-person parts of Eid

A call is an addition, not a replacement. The Eid prayer is done in congregation, so you can't "join" it through a screen; go to the prayer at your local mosque or Eid ground and call your family afterwards. See How do I pray the Eid prayer? If you live alone or far from a Muslim community, try to visit a mosque or a friend for at least part of the day as well.

When the call makes you feel lonely

Seeing your family laughing together on a screen can hurt when you are on your own. That feeling is normal and doesn't mean you love Eid less. Plan something for the rest of the day, such as a meal with other converts or a walk in the park, so the call isn't the only highlight. See What if I feel lonely on Eid as a new Muslim?

Key points
  • Celebrating Eid with family abroad by video call is completely allowed.
  • It counts as keeping family ties, which Islam strongly encourages.
  • The Eid prayer itself must be prayed in person, not over a screen.
  • Share greetings, food, gifts and dua to make the call feel like Eid.
Tip: Agree on a call time a few days before Eid, after your Eid prayer and before their evening. Time zones are the biggest reason these calls get missed.
