Most scholars say you should avoid cooking pork, even for non-Muslims, because it means helping with something Allah has forbidden. Some scholars allow it when refusing would cause real hardship, such as caring for a parent who depends on you. Either way, you never eat or taste it yourself.

Why most scholars discourage it

The majority view is that Islamic rulings on food apply to all people, and that a Muslim shouldn't actively help in what is forbidden. Cooking and serving pork is seen as taking part in it, similar to how the Prophet ﷺ said that Allah cursed not only the one who drinks wine, but also the one who serves it, carries it and sells it (Sunan Abi Dawud 3674).

And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression." Quran 5:2

For why pork is forbidden in the first place, see Why can't Muslims eat pork?

The more lenient view

Some scholars, mainly from the Hanafi school, say non-Muslims aren't asked to follow the details of Islamic law in this life, so preparing food that is lawful in their own religion is a lighter matter. Others allow it out of need: a convert living at home whose parents expect help with dinner, or a carer for an elderly relative. Even on this view, it's better to reduce it where you can and wash your hands and utensils afterwards.

Kind ways to handle it at home

  • Cook the rest of the meal. Offer to make the sides, a dessert, or a halal main that everyone can share.
  • Swap the meat. Many family recipes work with chicken, beef or turkey sausages. Some families never notice the difference.
  • Explain gently. "I'm happy to cook, I just can't handle pork any more" is honest and calm.
  • Keep separate tools. If pork is cooked in the house, use your own pan and board, and wash shared items before use. See Is it haram to eat food that touched pork?

Islam also commands kindness to parents, even when they aren't Muslim. Refusing to cook pork shouldn't turn into refusing to help, being harsh, or making mealtimes a fight. For cooking during Ramadan, see Can I cook for my non-Muslim family during Ramadan?

What about work?

Cooking pork as a job is a separate question with its own discussion. See Can I keep working at a restaurant that serves pork as a Muslim?
