Can I count my taxes as zakat?

No. Taxes and zakat are separate duties. Taxes are a legal obligation to the state for public services; zakat is an act of worship with its own rate and recipients set by Allah. Paying taxes doesn't replace zakat. But tax you owe right now can be subtracted from your wealth as a debt when you calculate zakat.
Different purposes
Zakat must go to the groups named in the Quran:
Taxes fund roads, schools, defense and much more, for everyone, rich and poor. They also aren't paid with the intention of zakat. That's why contemporary scholars agree that taxes, even high ones, can't be counted as zakat. Paying taxes in a non-Muslim country is part of honoring your agreements and the law.
Deducting tax that's due
When calculating zakat, many scholars allow you to subtract debts that are due now. Tax you owe but haven't paid yet, like a tax bill due next month or tax set aside from freelance income, counts as such a debt. So it reduces your zakatable wealth, even though it doesn't replace zakat. See Do I have to pay zakat if I have debt?
Tax relief on your zakat
In many countries, zakat paid to a registered charity counts as a charitable donation:
- USA: may be tax-deductible if you itemize and give to a 501(c)(3) organization.
- UK: Gift Aid can add 25% to your donation at no extra cost to you.
- Elsewhere in Europe: many countries offer deductions for registered charities.
Scholars generally say tax relief doesn't affect your zakat. Just don't count the government's top-up as part of what you paid.
The bigger picture
Zakat was one of the earliest welfare systems, but it remains a pillar of worship, not just a social policy. You pay your taxes as a good citizen, and you pay your zakat as a believer. Both can be done with a good heart. See How do I calculate my zakat?
- Taxes don't count as zakat.
- Zakat has its own rate and recipients.
- Tax due now can be subtracted as a debt.
- Zakat may qualify for charity tax relief.
