It depends on the role. Most scholars say jobs that directly involve interest, such as loans, mortgages or credit sales, should be avoided, and being unpaid does not change that. Roles that do not touch interest, such as IT, HR or compliance, are debated, and an internship in an Islamic bank or a non-lending team is the safest choice.

Why banks are a concern

Interest, called riba, is forbidden in Islam. The Quran says:

Fear Allah, and give up outstanding interest if you are [true] believers." Quran 2:278

The Prophet ﷺ cursed the one who accepts interest, the one who pays it, the one who records it and the two witnesses, and said they are all equal (Sahih Muslim 1598). The concern is about what you help to do, not about whether you are paid. An unpaid internship still means working inside the system, so the question is which team you join. See Can I work at a bank as a Muslim?

Which roles are less problematic?

  • Most scholars advise avoiding: loan or mortgage teams, credit card sales, and anything that writes, approves or processes interest-based products.
  • Debated roles: IT, cybersecurity, HR, marketing for the whole bank, facilities or compliance. Some scholars allow them since you are not part of the interest transaction, while others advise avoiding conventional banks altogether.
  • Clearer options: Islamic banks and Islamic finance departments, fee-based services such as currency exchange or payments, and fintech firms with no lending.

Even if a role is debated, ask the bank which team you would join before accepting, since the same bank may place interns in very different areas.

Internships are different from needing a salary

A person who must pay rent or feed a family may stay in a doubtful job for a short time while looking for other work. An internship is temporary and optional, so that argument is weaker. Gaining experience another way

  • Apply to accounting firms, audit teams, consultancies or charities, where you learn the same skills.
  • Look at Islamic finance firms, takaful providers and ethical investment funds.
  • Ask your careers service for fintech start-ups, payment companies and corporate finance roles outside lending.
  • Join a finance society, enter case competitions and build a project portfolio.
  • If you take a bank internship, ask to work in a non-lending team and be honest that you avoid interest products.

Key points
  • Interest is forbidden, and recording or witnessing it is also warned against (Sahih Muslim 1598).
  • Being unpaid does not change the type of work you do.
  • Interest roles are avoided; indirect roles are debated; Islamic finance is clearer.
  • An internship is optional, so look for alternatives first.
Tip: Ask your careers service for a list of halal-friendly internships, such as audit, charity finance and Islamic banking. Starting your search early gives you more options.
