Yes, women can do ghusl without undoing their braids. The Prophet ﷺ told a woman with tightly braided hair that three handfuls of water poured over her head were enough. What matters is that water reaches the scalp and the roots of the hair.

The hadith of Umm Salamah

Umm Salamah, a wife of the Prophet ﷺ, asked him: "I am a woman who braids my hair tightly. Should I undo it for ghusl after janabah?" He said no, it was enough to pour three handfuls of water on her head and then pour water over the rest of her body (Sahih Muslim 330).

When Aisha heard that a Companion was telling women to undo their braids for ghusl, she was surprised. She said she used to bathe with the Prophet ﷺ from one container and only poured water over her head three times (Sahih Muslim 331).

وَمَا جَعَلَ عَلَيْكُمْ فِى ٱلدِّينِ مِنْ حَرَجٍ "And He has not placed upon you in the religion any difficulty." Quran 22:78

Water must reach the scalp

The concession is about the length of the braids, not the scalp. So:

  • Pour water over your head and rub it into the scalp with your fingers.
  • Make sure the roots and parting lines get wet.
  • If braids are so tight or so thickly coated with product that water can't reach the scalp, loosen them or wash the product out first.
  • The rest of the braid's length doesn't have to be soaked through.

This works for box braids, cornrows, plaits and locs. See How do I do ghusl? for the full steps.

Ghusl after a period

Most scholars say the same rule applies to the ghusl after a period. Some Hanbali scholars say undoing the braids is better or required for that ghusl, because it happens less often. If your braids are easy to take out, doing so after your period is a nice way to be on the safe side. See When can I pray again after my period ends?

What about men with braids?

The hadith was about a woman. Many Hanafi scholars say a man must make sure water reaches all his hair, so he should undo braids or locs if he can. Other scholars treat men like women here, as long as the scalp gets wet. If you're a brother with locs, ask a local scholar and do your best to wet the whole head.

Key points
  • Women don't need to undo braids for ghusl (Sahih Muslim 330).
  • Water must reach the scalp and hair roots.
  • Some Hanbalis prefer undoing braids after a period.
  • For men, scholars differ; many Hanafis say undo them.
Tip: Use a jug or cup to pour water slowly onto your parting lines, then massage it in. It reaches the scalp far better than standing under the shower and hoping.
