Can I do Umrah on my period?

Yes, partly. You can enter ihram, say the talbiyah and make dua while on your period, but you can't do tawaf around the Kaaba until your period ends and you've taken a ghusl. Most women simply wait in ihram, then finish their Umrah once they're pure. If your group is leaving before then, scholars offer a few solutions.

What you can do on your period

A period is never a sign of a failed trip. When Aisha got her period on the way to Hajj and started crying, the Prophet ﷺ comforted her: "This is the thing which Allah has ordained for all the daughters of Adam. So do what all the pilgrims do except that you do not perform the tawaf round the Kaaba till you are clean" (Sahih al-Bukhari 305).

  • Entering ihram: yes. Take a shower, make your intention at the miqat and start the talbiyah. The Prophet ﷺ even told Asma bint Umays, who had just given birth, to take a bath and enter ihram (Sahih Muslim 1209).
  • Dua, dhikr and talbiyah: yes, as much as you like.
  • Prayer: no; it's lifted during your period, as at home. See Do I have to pray while on my period?
  • Tawaf: no, not until you're pure and have done ghusl.

Waiting in ihram

The usual answer is patience. Stay in ihram, keep its rules (no perfume, no cutting hair), and rest at the hotel. Most scholars say a woman on her period shouldn't stay inside the mosque itself. When your period ends, take a ghusl, then do tawaf, sa'i and trim your hair. Your Umrah is complete and fully valid.

If your period starts after you've finished tawaf but before sa'i, most scholars say you can carry on with sa'i, since it doesn't require ritual purity.

What if my group is leaving?

This is the hard case, and scholars differ:

  • Hanafi: tawaf done during a period is counted, but it's sinful without a real need and a penalty (an animal sacrifice) is due, unless it is repeated once pure.
  • Majority (Maliki, Shafi'i, Hanbali): purity is a condition of tawaf, so the woman stays in ihram until she can return. Some, like Ibn Taymiyyah, allowed tawaf in real necessity, using a pad, when she truly can't stay or come back.

Before deciding, talk to your group's scholar. Many agents can change a flight for a few days, which is usually the simplest fix.

Can I take pills to delay my period?

Many scholars allow taking medication to delay a period for Umrah or Hajj, as long as it's safe for you. Talk to your doctor a few months before travel, since some women get spotting on these pills. It's a choice, not an obligation.

Key points
  • You can enter ihram and make dua on your period.
  • Tawaf waits until your period ends and you've done ghusl.
  • Sa'i doesn't require purity, according to most scholars.
  • If time runs out, ask a scholar; the schools differ on the solution.
Tip: When you book, leave a few spare days at the end of your trip and track your cycle. A flexible ticket costs less stress than racing a deadline in Mecca.
