Yes, you can drink from a glass that once held alcohol, as long as it has been washed. Most scholars treat wine as impure, so the glass just needs a normal wash to remove any trace. Once it's clean, it's like any other glass.

Washing makes it clean

Islam doesn't ask you to throw away dishes because of what was in them before. A Companion, Abu Tha'labah, asked the Prophet ﷺ about eating from the vessels of the People of the Book. He said that if they could find other vessels, they should use those, and if not, they should wash them and then eat from them (Sahih al-Bukhari 5478). Other narrations of the same story mention that these were pots used for pork and wine. If washing is enough for cookware used for pork and wine, it's certainly enough for a wine glass or beer mug.

Is alcohol actually impure?

Scholars differ on this, and it explains why washing matters:

  • Majority view (all four schools): wine and other intoxicating drinks are physically impure (najis), so any drops left in a glass must be washed off.
  • Minority view: some early and later scholars held that alcohol is forbidden to drink but not physically impure, because the "defilement" in Quran 5:90 is moral.

Either way, the practical answer is the same: wash it, and you're fine. A normal wash with water and washing-up liquid, or a run through the dishwasher, is enough. This difference of opinion also comes up with perfumes. See Is perfume with alcohol haram?

Everyday situations

  • Your own glasses at home: if your family or old self used them for wine, wash them and keep using them. No need to buy new ones.
  • Restaurants and cafés: their glasses are washed between customers, so drinking water or juice from them is fine.
  • Shared housing: if a housemate leaves a glass with beer in it, rinse it out before you use it. See What if my roommate drinks alcohol?
  • Wine glasses for soft drinks: using a clean wine glass for water is allowed, though some prefer not to, to avoid looking like they're drinking wine.

Don't overthink it

New Muslims sometimes worry about invisible traces on every cup. Islam isn't built on that kind of suspicion. If something looks and smells clean, treat it as clean. What's forbidden is drinking alcohol itself. See Can Muslims drink alcohol?

Key points
  • A washed glass that held alcohol is fine to use.
  • The Prophet ﷺ allowed washing and using the vessels of the People of the Book (Sahih al-Bukhari 5478).
  • Most scholars say alcohol is impure; some say it isn't.
  • A normal wash or dishwasher cycle is enough.
Tip: If you're clearing out your kitchen after becoming Muslim, keep the glasses and give away the bottles. A good wash turns your old wine glasses into perfectly good glasses for water and juice.
