Yes, you can dry yourself with a towel after wudu. Your wudu stays completely valid, and the majority of scholars say drying is allowed. Some prefer letting the water dry naturally, but it's a matter of preference, not a rule.

What the Sunnah shows

The clearest report comes from the Prophet's ﷺ wife Maymunah. After he ﷺ had a bath, she brought him a cloth, but he didn't take it and instead shook the water off with his hands (Sahih Muslim 317). Scholars read this in different ways:

  • Most scholars say it shows drying is optional. He may have declined that cloth for a simple reason, like the cloth or the weather, and shaking water off with the hand is itself a kind of drying.
  • Some scholars, including a view in the Shafi'i school, say not drying is slightly better, following what he did that day.

No school says using a towel breaks your wudu or reduces its validity. The Hanafis and Hanbalis openly allow it, and many Companions dried themselves.

What about the sins leaving with the water?

Some people worry that drying off removes the reward, because the Prophet ﷺ said sins leave the body with the water of wudu, "with the last drop of water" (Sahih Muslim 244). Scholars explain that this happens as you wash, not afterwards. Drying your face doesn't bring the sins back. See Does wudu wash away sins?

Allah wants purification to be a blessing, not a burden:

وَلَـٰكِن يُرِيدُ لِيُطَهِّرَكُمْ وَلِيُتِمَّ نِعْمَتَهُۥ عَلَيْكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَشْكُرُونَ "...but He intends to purify you and complete His favor upon you that you may be grateful." Quran 5:6

When drying is a good idea

  • In cold weather, so you don't get chilled walking out in winter.
  • At work or school, so you don't drip on floors or look like you've been in the rain.
  • With socks: dry your feet before putting socks back on, especially if you plan to wipe over them later.
  • On sensitive skin, to prevent cracking and dryness.

A small personal towel or a few paper towels is all you need. For the full list of recommended acts, see What are the sunnahs of wudu?

Same rule for ghusl

The same applies after ghusl (the full bath): drying is allowed, and many scholars say it's fine to towel off as you normally would. See How do I do ghusl?

Key points
  • Drying with a towel after wudu is allowed.
  • It doesn't affect the validity of wudu.
  • Some scholars prefer air-drying; most see no issue either way.
  • The reward of wudu isn't lost by drying off.
Tip: Keep a small microfibre towel in your bag or desk drawer. It dries fast, fits anywhere, and makes wudu at work or university much more comfortable.
