Can I eat food that fell on the floor?

Yes, you can eat food that fell on the floor if it is still clean and safe after you wipe it. The Prophet ﷺ actually encouraged picking up a dropped bite, removing any dirt, and eating it instead of wasting it. If it fell somewhere dirty, impure or unhygienic, you don't have to eat it.
The sunnah of the dropped bite
The Prophet ﷺ said, "When any of you drops a morsel, let him remove any dirt from it and eat it, and not leave it for Satan" (Sahih Muslim 2034). This wasn't about the "five-second rule". It was about respecting food as a blessing from Allah and not throwing away good provision because of a small accident.
In the same hadith, he also told people to lick their fingers and clean their plates, because no one knows which part of the food holds the blessing.
What "leaving it for Satan" means
Scholars explain that wasting food and arrogantly thinking "this is beneath me" is a habit Satan loves. Picking up the bite is a small act of humility and gratitude. The Quran warns strongly against waste:
When you shouldn't eat it
The hadith says to remove the dirt, which assumes the food can actually be cleaned. Islam also forbids harming yourself. So skip it if:
- It fell onto something impure (najis), like urine, a dog's saliva or a dirty bathroom floor.
- It landed on a street, a public transport floor or somewhere obviously filthy.
- It's wet or sticky food like rice, yoghurt or sauce that picks up dirt and can't be wiped.
- You have a weak immune system, or it's for a baby, and a doctor has advised extra care.
In those cases you're not "leaving it for Satan"; you're protecting your health, which is also a sunnah value. If you can, give it to birds or animals instead of the bin.
