Can I exercise on my period?

Yes, you can exercise on your period. Islam has no rule against working out, running, swimming or playing sports during menstruation. The only things paused during your period are acts of worship like prayer and fasting, so listen to your body and your doctor, not to myths.
What your period actually changes
During menstruation (hayd), a Muslim woman does not pray or fast, and there are rules around intimacy and, according to many scholars, touching the mushaf and staying in the prayer hall. That's it. Daily life, work, study and sport carry on as normal. See Do I have to pray while on my period?
When Aisha was upset that her period started during Hajj, the Prophet ﷺ comforted her, saying it is something Allah has decreed for the daughters of Adam, and told her to do everything the pilgrims do except the tawaf around the Kaaba (Sahih al-Bukhari 294). If she could walk the Hajj routes on her period, a gym session is no problem.
Your period is not "dirty"
The Quran describes menstruation as a time of discomfort:
The word adha here is understood as discomfort or hurt, and the verse goes on to talk about intimacy. It doesn't mean a woman is impure as a person. The Prophet ﷺ ate with, leaned on and lived normally with his wives during their periods. So there's no religious reason to stay at home or avoid people.
Practical points
- Swimming is fine with a tampon or period swimwear. Pool water doesn't affect your ghusl, and you'll still do ghusl when your period ends.
- Listen to your body. Light exercise like walking, stretching or pilates can ease cramps for many women. Heavy lifting on day one may not feel good, and that's fine too.
- Mosque gyms or halls. If a sports hall is part of a mosque building, ask whether it counts as the prayer area. See Can women go to the mosque on their period?
- Medical issues. If you have very heavy bleeding, severe pain or a condition like endometriosis, follow your doctor's advice.
Keep your faith active too
A period break from prayer doesn't mean a break from Allah. You can make dua, do dhikr during your workout and listen to the Quran. See Can I do dhikr on my period?
- Exercise and sports are allowed during your period.
- Only prayer, fasting and a few worship-related acts are paused.
- Menstruation doesn't make you impure as a person.
- Follow your body's signals and your doctor's advice.
