Yes, you can. There's no rule against learning about Islam while you're still part of your church community. Islam asks for free, sincere belief, not a rushed break, and many people explore for months or years. Being honest with yourself and kind to your church friends makes the process easier.

Exploring is allowed, and Islam wants it free

Islam teaches that belief can't be forced, and people are free to learn and compare. The Quran also invites Christians and Jews to find common ground with Muslims:

Let us come to common terms: that we will worship none but Allah, associate none with Him, nor take one another as lords instead of Allah.'" Quran 3:64

Nobody should rush you out of your church or into a mosque. Learning about another faith doesn't make you disloyal to the people you love.

What exploring can look like

  • Reading: an introduction to Islam and the Quran in translation. See How do I learn about Islam without feeling pressured?
  • Asking questions: of Muslims, an imam or a mosque's visitors' team.
  • Visiting a mosque: open days and visitor times are made for people like you.
  • Staying in church: many people continue to attend for friendship, family or worship while they think things through.

Handling the tension honestly

It can feel awkward to sit in a service while your mind is full of new questions. A few things help:

  • Be honest with yourself. Notice what you believe now and what you're still unsure about.
  • Stay respectful. Treat your church friends with the same kindness you always have. The Quran asks Muslims to deal with Christians and Jews gracefully (Quran 29:46).
  • Avoid arguments. You don't have to debate doctrine in the pews or at coffee hour.
  • Keep your pace. Not deciding yet is a perfectly valid place to be.

If you become convinced

If you become sure that Islam is true, then you would, as a Muslim, stop taking part in worship that is built on beliefs Islam does not accept, such as the Trinity, but you can stay kind and close to your family and friends. Whether and when to tell your pastor is also your choice. See Should I tell my pastor I'm exploring Islam?
