Can I get married in Muharram?

Yes, you can get married in Muharram. Nothing in the Quran or authentic hadith forbids a nikah in any month of the year. The idea that Muharram weddings are unlucky is a cultural belief, not part of Islam.

Where the idea comes from

Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar and one of the four sacred months. In some cultures, especially in South Asia and among Shia Muslims, families avoid weddings in Muharram, at least in the first ten days. The reason is respect: Husayn, the Prophet's ﷺ grandson, was killed at Karbala on the 10th of Muharram, and many people feel a celebration in this season of grief is out of place.

Others go further and believe a Muharram marriage will bring bad luck. That belief has no basis in Islam. See What is Ashura and should I fast on it?

What the sacred months really mean

إِنَّ عِدَّةَ ٱلشُّهُورِ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ ٱثْنَا عَشَرَ شَهْرًا فِى كِتَـٰبِ ٱللَّهِ يَوْمَ خَلَقَ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضَ مِنْهَآ أَرْبَعَةٌ حُرُمٌ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلدِّينُ ٱلْقَيِّمُ ۚ فَلَا تَظْلِمُوا۟ فِيهِنَّ أَنفُسَكُمْ "Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve [lunar] months in the register of Allah [from] the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred. That is the correct religion, so do not wrong yourselves during them." Quran 9:36

The sacred months are about avoiding sin and wrongdoing, and doing more good deeds. A halal marriage is a good deed, not a wrong. It protects your faith and builds a family, so it fits the spirit of a sacred month well.

Islam rejects "unlucky" times

In pre-Islamic Arabia, people thought weddings in Shawwal were unlucky. 'Aishah said that the Prophet ﷺ married her in Shawwal and began married life with her in Shawwal, and asked who among his wives was more fortunate than her (Sahih Muslim 1423). The lesson is clear: no month brings bad luck to a marriage. Only Allah decides what happens. See Can I still say "good luck" as a Muslim?

Being wise with family

  • If your spouse's family is Shia, or comes from a culture that avoids Muharram weddings, talk about it early. Waiting a few weeks out of respect can be a kind choice.
  • You could hold a simple nikah in Muharram and keep the big party for later.
  • Avoid a loud celebration on Ashura itself if you'll have Shia guests or neighbors.

Whatever you decide, keep the wedding simple and blessed. See Is it okay to have a big expensive wedding as a Muslim?

Key points
  • Marriage is allowed in Muharram and every other month.
  • Muharram is a sacred month, which means avoiding sin, not avoiding weddings.
  • Believing a month is unlucky goes against Islamic teaching.
  • Some families avoid Muharram out of respect for Karbala, so talk it through.
Tip: If relatives worry, gently share the hadith about 'Aishah's Shawwal wedding. It shows the Prophet ﷺ himself chose a "bad luck" month to prove that no month is cursed.
