Yes, you can. A toast is a wish for the couple, and nothing in it requires alcohol. Stand, give a warm speech and raise a glass of juice, water or sparkling soda with everyone else. Some Muslims prefer not to raise a glass at all, so if you like you can simply give the speech and say your wish aloud.

A toast is a wish, not a drink

In most Western weddings the toast is a short speech that ends with everyone lifting a glass to wish the couple well. The important part is the words and the good intention, not what is in the glass. A Muslim can take part in that spirit and drink nothing forbidden.

If you're giving the speech, you are doing something Islam values: speaking kindly. The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should say what is good or keep silent (Sahih al-Bukhari 6018).

What to put in your speech

  • Start with a short, true story that shows who the bride or groom is.
  • Keep it honest: no exaggeration, no embarrassing secrets, no jokes that mock someone.
  • Pay a compliment with care. The Prophet ﷺ warned against praising someone excessively and taught that if you must praise, you should say what you think of the person while leaving the final judgment to Allah (Sahih al-Bukhari 2662).
  • End with a wish: "May you always have love, patience and laughter."

You can also quietly make a dua: the Prophet's ﷺ words to a newly married man were, "May Allah bless for you, and may He bless on you, and combine both of you in good" (Sunan Abi Dawud 2130). See What do I say to congratulate a newly married couple?

Raising a glass without alcohol

Make sure you have your own drink before the toast starts, so nobody pours you champagne. Good choices are sparkling grape juice, apple juice, sparkling water or a soft drink.

  • Say to the staff when you arrive, "I'll have juice for the toast, please."
  • Hold up your glass with the others and join in the "cheers."
  • If someone has already poured wine for you, simply leave it untouched or ask for a replacement.

Some Muslims prefer not to lift a glass at all, because the gesture is linked with drinking. Both choices are respectful, and if you aren't sure, a speech without a glass is the simplest. For help if people push you to drink, see How do I turn down alcohol at a work dinner?

If the speech is at your own friend's wedding

Tell the couple or the best man in advance that you'll be toasting with juice. It prevents confusion, and nobody is offended. The friends who hear you speak from the heart will remember your words much longer than the drink in your hand.

Key points
  • A toast is a wish; you can give one with juice or water.
  • Speak good words or stay silent (Sahih al-Bukhari 6018), and praise with care (Sahih al-Bukhari 2662).
  • Make a dua for the couple (Sunan Abi Dawud 2130).
  • Raising juice or giving the speech without a glass are both fine.
Tip: Write your speech out and time it. Two to three minutes is plenty, and you'll feel calmer knowing you won't ramble.
