Yes, you can give the adhan as a new Muslim. There is no waiting period after your shahada. What matters is that you know the words, pronounce them clearly, and, in a mosque, that the imam or mosque team is happy for you to do it.

Who can call the adhan?

Scholars list a few basic conditions for the person giving the adhan: being Muslim, sane, and able to say the words correctly in order. For the public adhan in the mosque, the four schools hold that it is given by a man. Being a convert is not a barrier at all. Bilal ibn Rabah, the first muezzin of Islam, was a freed Abyssinian slave who had become Muslim as an adult, and the Prophet ﷺ chose him because of his strong, beautiful voice.

وَإِذَا نَادَيْتُمْ إِلَى ٱلصَّلَوٰةِ ٱتَّخَذُوهَا هُزُوًا وَلَعِبًا "And when you call to prayer, they take it in ridicule and amusement." Quran 5:58

This verse shows the call to prayer was a public act from the earliest days, even when some mocked it. Calling it today is a way of carrying on that tradition.

The reward

The Prophet ﷺ said the muezzins will have the longest necks on the Day of Resurrection, a sign of honour (Sahih Muslim 387). He also said that no jinn, human or anything else hears the muezzin's voice without bearing witness for him on the Day of Judgement (Sahih al-Bukhari 609). It's a small act with a big reward.

At home or alone

You don't need a mosque to give the adhan. Many scholars say it is sunnah to call it, even quietly, when you pray alone at home, at work or outdoors. This is also a great way to practise. Some converts first learn the words to whisper them to a newborn. See What do I whisper in my baby's ear after birth? Women can say the words of the adhan or iqamah quietly for their own prayer or among other women, with some difference of opinion among the schools.

Calling it at the mosque

  • Ask first. Most mosques have a regular muezzin, so speak to the imam.
  • Practise the words. Learn the Arabic from a teacher or an audio recording, not only from transliteration.
  • Start small. Offer to call for a quiet weekday prayer before a busy Friday.
  • Don't worry about a perfect melody. Clear words matter more than a beautiful tune.

Mosques are usually delighted when new Muslims want to help. See Can I volunteer at a mosque as a new Muslim?

Key points
  • A new Muslim can give the adhan; there is no waiting period.
  • Know the words in order and pronounce them clearly.
  • Ask the imam before calling it in a mosque.
  • Calling the adhan when praying alone is a sunnah and good practice.
Tip: Record yourself saying the adhan on your phone and compare it with a recording from Mecca or Medina. A week of daily practice usually fixes most pronunciation slips.
