Can I give charity if I'm broke?

Yes. Even a tiny amount counts: the Prophet ﷺ said to protect yourself from the Fire even with half a date. If you have no money at all, helping others, doing good and avoiding harm are charity too. Islam never asks you to give what you can't afford, and zakat isn't due unless you have savings above the nisab.

Even half a date

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, "Save yourself from Hell-fire even by giving half a date-fruit in charity" (Sahih al-Bukhari 1417). A coin in a collection box, a snack for a hungry person or a €1 monthly donation are all real charity. Allah looks at sincerity, not size. Charity without money

When the Prophet ﷺ said every Muslim should give charity, people asked about someone who has nothing. He said: work and earn, then give; if not, help someone in need who asks for help; and if not, do good and keep away from evil, "and this will be regarded as charitable deeds" (Sahih al-Bukhari 1445). So you can always give:

  • your time, like helping a neighbor move,
  • your skills, like tutoring or fixing something,
  • your kindness, like a smile or a listening ear,
  • your restraint, simply not hurting anyone.

Don't overstretch

Islam is balanced. Give from what you have, without putting yourself or your family in hardship:

لِيُنفِقْ ذُو سَعَةٍ مِّن سَعَتِهِۦ ۖ وَمَن قُدِرَ عَلَيْهِ رِزْقُهُۥ فَلْيُنفِقْ مِمَّآ ءَاتَىٰهُ ٱللَّهُ ۚ لَا يُكَلِّفُ ٱللَّهُ نَفْسًا إِلَّا مَآ ءَاتَىٰهَا ۚ سَيَجْعَلُ ٱللَّهُ بَعْدَ عُسْرٍ يُسْرًا "Let a man of wealth spend from his wealth, and he whose provision is restricted - let him spend from what Allah has given him. Allah does not charge a soul except [according to] what He has given it. Allah will bring about, after hardship, ease." Quran 65:7

The Prophet ﷺ also said the best charity is given from surplus, and to start with your own dependents (Sahih al-Bukhari 1426). Paying your rent and feeding your family is rewarded too. And if you're struggling, you may be eligible to receive zakat. See Can I receive zakat as a new Muslim?

Small habits

  • Round up your shopping to the nearest euro or dollar and give the change.
  • Keep a small "sadaqah jar" at home.
  • Give something, however little, every Friday.
Key points
  • Even half a date counts as charity.
  • Good deeds count when you have no money.
  • Don't give at the expense of your family's needs.
  • If you're in need, you may receive zakat.
Tip: Set up the smallest monthly donation your favorite charity allows. Regular small giving is beloved to Allah and builds a lifelong habit.
