Yes, you can give zakat to a friend in need, as long as they fall into one of the eligible groups, such as being poor, needy or in debt. Friendship doesn't block zakat. In fact, you often know a friend's real situation better than any charity does.

What makes a friend eligible

Zakat goes to eight groups named in Quran 9:60. For a friend, the usual ones are:

  • Poor or needy: they can't cover basic needs like rent, food, bills or transport.
  • In debt: they owe money for halal needs and can't repay it.
  • Stranded traveller: they're far from home and cut off from their money.

Most scholars also say the person should be Muslim for obligatory zakat; voluntary sadaqah can go to anyone. See Who can receive zakat? and Can I give zakat to non-Muslims?

The Prophet ﷺ told Mu'adh that zakat is "taken from their rich and given to their poor" (Sahih al-Bukhari 1395). A friend who struggles to pay rent while you have savings is exactly that picture.

Friends who are too proud to ask

Some of the most deserving people never ask. The Quran describes them:

يَحْسَبُهُمُ ٱلْجَاهِلُ أَغْنِيَآءَ مِنَ ٱلتَّعَفُّفِ تَعْرِفُهُم بِسِيمَـٰهُمْ لَا يَسْـَٔلُونَ ٱلنَّاسَ إِلْحَافًا "An ignorant [person] would think them self-sufficient because of their restraint, but you will know them by their [characteristic] sign. They do not ask people persistently [or at all]." Quran 2:273

A friend who quietly skips meals out, or who lost a job and went silent, may be one of them. Your closeness lets you notice.

Things to watch

  • No strings attached. Zakat isn't a loan, a favour to repay, or a way to win influence.
  • Not for your own benefit. You can't use it to pay a friend for work they did for you, or to cover a shared bill that also helps you.
  • Not people you must support. If the "friend" is your spouse, child or parent, different rules apply.
  • Check, gently. If you're not sure they qualify, a kind, private question is fine.

Do you have to tell them?

No. Many scholars say you can simply give it as a gift so they don't feel embarrassed, as long as you intend it as zakat and they're eligible. See Do I have to tell the person it's zakat?

Key points
  • A friend can receive zakat if they're eligible.
  • Poverty, need or unpayable debt are the usual reasons.
  • Zakat must never come back to benefit you.
  • You can give it quietly without calling it zakat.
Tip: Give it in a way that protects their dignity: a bank transfer with a short kind message, or an envelope left with a note. The less awkward it feels, the more blessed it is.
