Yes, you can go to summer camp as a Muslim. Hiking, canoeing, crafts and campfires are all halal fun. Just plan ahead for prayer, food, modest swimming and sleeping arrangements, and choose a camp that respects them.

Prayer in the outdoors

Camp is actually one of the easiest places to pray. The Prophet ﷺ said that the whole earth has been made a place of prayer and a means of purification for him (Sahih al-Bukhari 335). So a clean patch of grass, a cabin floor or a forest clearing all work.

إِنَّ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ كَانَتْ عَلَى ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ كِتَـٰبًا مَّوْقُوتًا "...Indeed, prayer has been decreed upon the believers a decree of specified times." Quran 4:103
  • Pack a light prayer mat or towel and a compass. See How do I find the qibla without an app?
  • Bring a water bottle for wudu. If there's truly no water, tayammum with clean earth is allowed.
  • Tell counselors your prayer times so activities can include a short break.

Food at camp

Camp kitchens love hot dogs, burgers and marshmallows, which often contain pork or pork gelatin. Tell the camp in advance that you need halal or vegetarian meals, and check marshmallow labels or bring halal ones for the campfire. Many camps in the USA and UK already handle allergy and vegetarian diets, so a halal request is easy to add.

Swimming, cabins and mixed activities

  • Swimming: wear modest swimwear and ask about single-gender swim times. See Can I still go swimming at a public pool as a Muslim?
  • Cabins: they should be single-gender. Ask about private changing and shower times if you need them.
  • Evening events: dances or games with lots of physical contact are where you can politely sit out.

Muslim camps are an option too

Many Muslim organizations in the USA, UK and Europe run summer camps with daily prayer, Islamic sessions and halal food, alongside the usual adventures. They're a great way for new Muslims and kids from convert families to make Muslim friends. For school-run trips, see Can I go on school trips as a Muslim?
