Yes, you can go to a work lunch while fasting. Sitting with colleagues while they eat doesn't affect your fast at all. Just don't eat or drink, and feel free to skip it if it makes the day too hard.

Being there is fine

Your fast is broken by eating, drinking and a few other things, not by being near food. So you can join the team lunch, the client meeting or the leaving do, chat, and enjoy the company. Many Muslims do this every Ramadan. It can even be a good chance to explain what fasting is, if people are curious.

If you accidentally take a bite or a sip because you forgot you were fasting, your fast is still valid. The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever forgets and eats or drinks should complete the fast, because Allah fed them (Sahih al-Bukhari 1933). Once you remember, stop and carry on.

When it's better to say no

  • If it's tough for you. Watching others eat a burger at 1pm can be hard in your first Ramadan. Politely skipping is completely okay.
  • If the venue is mainly a bar. A lunch at a restaurant is one thing; a long session centred on drinking is another.
  • If you'd only sit there out of guilt. Your colleagues will understand, especially if you tell them why.

How to handle it politely

A simple line works: "I'm fasting for Ramadan, but I'd love to join for the chat." Order nothing, or ask if you can take a meal home for iftar. If someone keeps pushing food on you, stay kind. The Prophet ﷺ taught that if someone argues with a fasting person, they should just say, "I am fasting" (Sahih al-Bukhari 1894).

You could also suggest moving the team meal to after sunset once, so you can eat together. Many offices now hold a shared iftar. For what to eat when the sun sets, see What is iftar and how do I break my fast?

Business lunches and clients

If it's a meeting with a client, you can still attend and do your job. A quick word to your manager beforehand helps, so nobody is surprised when you don't order. Most professionals find it more interesting than awkward. And after Ramadan, you can return the gesture. See Can I invite my coworkers to an Eid celebration?

Key points
  • Being around food doesn't break your fast.
  • Forgetfully eating doesn't break it either; stop once you remember.
  • Skipping the lunch is fine if it's too hard.
  • Suggest an after-sunset meal so everyone can eat together.
Tip: Bring a bottle of water and a few dates in your bag. If the lunch runs late into the evening in winter, you'll be ready to break your fast right at sunset.
