Yes, you can join the team, but skip the pub part. Playing sport is good for your body and your friendships, and nothing in Islam stops you from training and competing with non-Muslims. The problem is only the drinking culture around some socials. You can enjoy the team without sitting in a drinking session.

The sport is fine, the pub is the issue

Islam encourages strength and healthy activity, so a university team is a good thing. What most scholars advise against is sitting in a setting where alcohol is being passed around. The Prophet ﷺ said that a believer should not sit at a spread where khamr, meaning intoxicating drink, is circulated (Jami at-Tirmidhi 2801). A pub night, and especially drinking games, is built around exactly that. A quick soft drink does not change what the evening is about.

The same thinking applies to other student events. See Can I go to college parties if I don't drink?

Why the company matters

The Prophet ﷺ compared a good companion to a musk seller: you either buy some or at least enjoy the scent. A bad companion is like a blacksmith working a furnace: he may burn your clothes, or you at least get a bad smell (Sahih al-Bukhari 2101). Your teammates are not bad people, but a team that always socialises around alcohol can pull you towards things you are trying to leave behind.

How to stay on the team

  • Talk to the captain early. Say simply, "I don't drink for religious reasons, but I'm really keen to play."
  • Suggest alternatives. Ask for a post-match meal, a coffee, bowling, a park picnic or a day trip.
  • Show up for everything else. Training, matches, travel and team dinners at a restaurant mean you are very much part of the group.
  • Skip initiations and drinking games. You can decline politely and without a lecture.
  • Leave before the drinking starts. A short appearance at the beginning, and a friendly goodbye, keeps relationships warm.

Many teams have non-drinkers, and captains often say yes to a change once someone asks. For other social settings, see Can I go to a bar with friends if I only drink soda?

Other things to plan around

Check the training and match times against prayer times, and tell your coach if you need a few minutes to pray. Pack modest kit, such as long shorts or leggings under your uniform if that helps you cover your awrah, the parts of the body that must be covered. Ramadan can also affect training, so mention it before the season starts. For team sports in general, see Can I still play on a mixed sports team as a Muslim?

Key points
  • Joining a university sports team is fine.
  • Avoid sitting at pub socials and drinking games (Jami at-Tirmidhi 2801).
  • Suggest alcohol-free socials and keep turning up for everything else.
  • Tell the captain and coach about prayer and Ramadan early.
Tip: Offer to organise one social yourself each term, such as a brunch or a games night. Teams often love a change and it makes you part of the team culture.
