Yes. Keeping fish is allowed in Islam, as long as you take good care of them: a clean tank, the right food and healthy water. Islam's main rule for any pet is kindness, and neglecting an animal in your care is a sin.

Pets are allowed

Nothing in the Quran or hadith forbids keeping fish for enjoyment. Just like cats (see Can I keep a cat inside my house?), fish are clean animals you can keep at home. Many Muslim families have aquariums, and kids especially love them.

Their food is your responsibility

Every creature's provision ultimately comes from Allah, but once an animal lives in your home, providing for it becomes your job:

وَمَا مِن دَآبَّةٍ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ إِلَّا عَلَى ٱللَّهِ رِزْقُهَا "There is no creature on earth but that its provision is from Allah." Quran 11:6

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ warned about a woman who was punished because she locked up a cat and "neither gave it food nor water" (Sahih al-Bukhari 3482). He also told of a man forgiven for giving water to a thirsty dog (Sahih al-Bukhari 2363). Small animals matter to Allah, and that includes the goldfish on your shelf.

Practical care

  • Choose a tank big enough for the fish you buy.
  • Keep the water clean and at the right temperature.
  • Arrange food for when you travel.
  • Research the species before buying, so you can actually care for it.

Watch the decorations

This one surprises many converts. Aquarium shops often sell Buddha heads, temple ruins and statues of deities as tank decorations. Avoid those. Rocks, plants, castles, shipwrecks and treasure chests are all fine.

What about "lucky" fish?

Some cultures keep certain fish, like goldfish or arowana, to bring luck or wealth (feng shui). In Islam, luck and provision come from Allah alone, not from a fish or the direction of a tank. Keep fish because you enjoy them, not as a charm. For more on superstitions, see Is it haram to whistle?

And when a fish dies, there's no ritual needed. Simply dispose of it respectfully.

Key points
  • Keeping fish is allowed.
  • Proper care is a real responsibility.
  • Avoid statues of deities as decorations.
  • Don't keep fish as a "luck" charm.
Tip: If you have kids, let them help feed the fish and clean the tank. It's a simple way to teach them that caring for animals is part of being a good Muslim.
