Yes. You can keep your beard in a passport or ID photo. In the US and UK the rules are about showing your whole face clearly and looking like you, not about being clean-shaven. There's no need to shave for a photo, and Islam doesn't ask you to either.

What passport photo rules actually ask for

Passport authorities want a clear, recent photo that matches how you look. That usually means a plain background, a neutral expression, your eyes open and your face fully visible from the chin to the top of the forehead. A beard is simply part of your face. If someone tells you to shave, that is not a passport rule, so ask to see the official guidance, which is published on the government website.

Head coverings are allowed for religious reasons in both countries as long as your face stays clear. See Can I take off my hijab for a passport or ID photo?

Keep the beard tidy

A neat, trimmed beard that leaves your mouth, jaw and cheeks clear is easy to match against your face at the border. A very long, thick beard can hide your jawline and make a likeness harder to check, so keeping it combed and trimmed is wise. It's also a good habit generally. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Keep the beards and cut the moustaches short" (Sahih al-Bukhari 5892), and trimming what goes beyond a fist is something Ibn Umar did.

If your look changes later

Your photo needs to look like you. If you grow a full beard, or shave one off, after your passport photo was taken, your appearance may no longer match it. Check the official guidance on when a new photo is needed, and renew your ID if it's required. It's better to update it than to be delayed at a border or an airport.

Is it allowed in Islam to take an ID photo?

Yes. Scholars treat official ID photos as a need, not a matter of vanity. Allah does not place hardship on you in religion:

وَمَا جَعَلَ عَلَيْكُمْ فِى ٱلدِّينِ مِنْ حَرَجٍ "and laid upon you no hardship in the religion" Quran 22:78

The same goes for driver's licenses, visas, work badges and other ID. If an employer or office asks you to remove your beard for an ID photo, you can ask politely for a religious accommodation. See Are Muslims protected by religious discrimination laws?

Key points
  • Passport photo rules need a clear, true likeness, not a shaved face.
  • Keep the beard neat so your face is easy to match.
  • Update your ID if your look changes a lot.
  • Official ID photos are allowed in Islam as a need.
Tip: Take your photo on a day when your beard is freshly trimmed. You'll look like yourself on most other days, too.
