No, most scholars say you should look for another job. Serving and selling alcohol is clearly forbidden in Islam. But you don't have to quit tomorrow and leave your family without income. Many scholars allow staying for a short time while you seriously search for halal work, and trust that Allah will open a way.

Serving alcohol is part of the sin

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: "Allah has cursed wine, its drinker, its server, its seller, its buyer, its presser, the one for whom it is pressed, the one who conveys it, and the one to whom it is conveyed" (Sunan Abi Dawud 3674).

So bartending, serving drinks or working the till at a liquor store fall under this warning, even if you never drink yourself.

Necessity and a transition period

Islam is realistic. If leaving immediately would leave you unable to pay rent or feed your family, many scholars allow staying temporarily, on two conditions:

  • You're actively and seriously looking for another job.
  • You leave as soon as reasonable halal work is available.

During that time, try to reduce your contact with alcohol where possible.

Allah provides for those who leave something for Him

وَمَن يَتَّقِ ٱللَّهَ يَجْعَل لَّهُۥ مَخْرَجًا وَيَرْزُقْهُ مِنْ حَيْثُ لَا يَحْتَسِبُ "And whoever fears Allah, He will make for him a way out, and will provide for him from where he does not expect." Quran 65:2-3

Many converts share stories of finding better jobs soon after leaving work they felt uneasy about.

Practical options

  • Ask to switch roles: kitchen prep, door staff, events or management tasks without serving alcohol.
  • Use your skills elsewhere: cafés, juice bars, hotel reception, catering for halal events, retail.
  • Hospitality experience is valued in customer service, airlines and tourism.
  • Tell your mosque you're looking. Communities often share job leads.

Your past income

Money you earned before becoming Muslim is yours. The Quran says whoever stops "may have what is past" (Quran 2:275). Don't let guilt about the past freeze you. Focus on the next step.
