Can I keep my old rosary after becoming Muslim?
You can keep it as a family keepsake, but not use it for prayer. A Catholic rosary is built around Christian devotions and usually carries a crucifix, so it shouldn't be worn or prayed with. If it holds memories, store it respectfully, or give it to a Christian relative who will treasure it.
Why a rosary is different from Muslim prayer beads
At first glance a rosary looks a lot like a Muslim misbaha or tasbih. The difference is what it's for. A rosary guides specific Christian prayers, such as the Hail Mary and the Glory Be, and the crucifix on it is a symbol of beliefs Islam doesn't share. Muslim beads are just a counting aid for remembering Allah, with no sacred symbol attached.
Your options with your old rosary
- Keep it as a memory. If it was a gift from a grandparent or from your First Communion, many scholars see no harm in keeping it in a box as a keepsake, as long as you don't wear it, display the cross or use it in worship.
- Give it back to the family. A Christian parent or cousin may value it deeply. Handing it on is kind and avoids any doubt.
- Don't throw it away in anger. Becoming Muslim doesn't call for insulting what your family holds dear. Gentle respect speaks better for Islam.

What to use instead for dhikr
Islam has its own beautiful habit of remembering Allah many times a day:
After each prayer, the Prophet ﷺ taught saying SubhanAllah 33 times, Alhamdulillah 33 times and Allahu Akbar 33 times, then completing the hundred with La ilaha illallah (Sahih Muslim 597). He also encouraged counting on the fingers, because the fingers will be asked and made to speak on the Day of Judgment (Sunan Abi Dawud 1501). Most scholars allow prayer beads too, while some prefer the fingers as closer to the Sunnah. A tasbih app is another option. See Can I use a digital tasbih or dhikr app?
What about reusing the beads?
Some converts ask whether they can take the crucifix and medal off and use the beads for dhikr. It isn't forbidden as such, but most people find a fresh misbaha simpler and free of mixed feelings. They're cheap and come in 33 or 99 beads.
- Don't pray with or wear a rosary after becoming Muslim.
- Keeping it stored away as a family memory is generally fine.
- Giving it to a Christian relative is a kind option.
- Use your fingers, a misbaha or an app for dhikr.
