Can I leave the mosque after the adhan?

No, you shouldn't leave the mosque after the adhan without a good reason. The Prophet ﷺ disapproved of walking out once the call has been made and before the prayer. If you have a real need, like an emergency, wudu, or you're going to lead or join prayer elsewhere, leaving is fine.

What the hadith says

Abu ash-Sha'tha' said he was sitting in the mosque with Abu Hurairah when the caller gave the adhan. A man stood up and walked out. Abu Hurairah watched him until he left, then said, "As for this one, he has disobeyed Abu al-Qasim ﷺ" (Sahih Muslim 655). Abu al-Qasim is a name of the Prophet ﷺ. Scholars took from this that leaving after the adhan, with no need and no plan to pray, is disliked, and some called it forbidden. The adhan is an invitation, and walking out as it is answered looks like turning it down.

Why staying matters

The time between adhan and iqamah is a precious gap. Dua made then is not rejected, and you can pray the sunnah prayers, read Quran or simply sit and remember Allah. The Quran describes the people of the mosques this way:

رِجَالٌ لَّا تُلْهِيهِمْ تِجَـٰرَةٌ وَلَا بَيْعٌ عَن ذِكْرِ ٱللَّهِ وَإِقَامِ ٱلصَّلَوٰةِ "[Are] men whom neither commerce nor sale distracts from the remembrance of Allah and performance of prayer..." Quran 24:37

When leaving is okay

  • You need wudu or the toilet, and you plan to come back.
  • An emergency: a sick child, a fire alarm, a call that can't wait.
  • You're going to pray elsewhere, for example you lead prayer at another mosque, or your family is waiting to pray together at home.
  • You've already prayed that prayer, for example on a journey where you combined prayers. Scholars allow leaving in this case, though joining again as a voluntary prayer is a nice option.
  • Work or transport that truly can't wait, like a train you must catch. Then pray as soon as you can.

A note for new Muslims

If you came to a mosque just for a class or to meet someone, and the adhan goes, the easiest thing is to stay ten or fifteen minutes and pray with everyone. It's often the best part of the visit, and people will be glad to see you in the row. If you came in only to use the facilities, pray two short rak'ahs before sitting. See What is tahiyyat al-masjid? Key points
  • Leaving after the adhan without need is disliked (Sahih Muslim 655).
  • Real needs and emergencies are valid reasons.
  • The time before iqamah is good for dua and sunnah prayers.
  • If you can stay a few minutes, pray with the congregation.
Tip: Check the iqamah times on your mosque's website or noticeboard. If you know the prayer starts 10 minutes after the adhan, you can plan visits so you're never stuck choosing between leaving and being late.
