Yes, you can listen to the Quran while you fall asleep. It isn't disrespectful to doze off while it plays, and many Muslims find it calming. Just don't let it replace your own bedtime adhkar, and consider using a sleep timer so it isn't playing all night to no one.

Is it disrespectful?

No. Scholars generally say there's nothing wrong with listening to the Quran in bed, whether you're sitting, lying down or drifting off. Allah praises those who remember Him "standing or sitting or [lying] on their sides" (Quran 3:191). Falling asleep isn't something you choose in the moment, and you're not blamed for it. The same goes for reading in bed. See Can I read the Quran in bed or lying down?

Listening with attention

The Quran asks us to listen carefully when it's recited.

وَإِذَا قُرِئَ ٱلْقُرْءَانُ فَٱسْتَمِعُوا۟ لَهُۥ وَأَنصِتُوا۟ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُرْحَمُونَ "So when the Qur'an is recited, then listen to it and pay attention that you may receive mercy." Quran 7:204

Many scholars say this verse is mainly about prayer and gatherings where the Quran is recited. While you're awake, try to really listen, even for a few minutes, because attentive listening is what brings the mercy mentioned here. Once you're asleep, you simply aren't accountable. It's better to stop the audio than to have the Quran playing in a room where people are chatting or watching TV.

Don't skip the bedtime sunnahs

Listening is good, but the Prophet ﷺ also taught a short bedtime routine you say yourself:

  • The three Quls. He would blow into his cupped hands, recite Surah al-Ikhlas, al-Falaq and an-Nas, and wipe over his body, three times (Sahih al-Bukhari 5017).
  • Ayat al-Kursi. Whoever recites it before sleeping has a guardian from Allah through the night (Sahih al-Bukhari 2311).
  • A short dua such as "Bismika Allahumma amutu wa ahya" (In Your name, O Allah, I die and I live).

Once you've done these, put on a recitation and relax. See What should I say before sleeping?

Practical tips

  • Use a sleep timer. Most Quran apps and phones let you stop audio after 30 or 60 minutes.
  • Pick calming surahs. Al-Mulk, Ya-Sin, ar-Rahman or the last juz' with a slow reciter work well.
  • Keep the volume low so it doesn't disturb a spouse or roommate.
  • Don't rely on it as "protection" alone. Your own recitation and adhkar matter most. See Can I play the Quran in my house for protection?
Key points
  • Listening to the Quran in bed and falling asleep to it is allowed.
  • You're not sinful for dozing off while it plays.
  • Say the three Quls and Ayat al-Kursi yourself before sleeping.
  • A sleep timer keeps it respectful and saves battery.
Tip: Make Surah al-Mulk your bedtime recitation: read along for the first few verses, then let the reciter finish it as you drift off. Over time you may find you've memorized it.
