Yes, Muslims can live off-campus with non-Muslim housemates. Nothing in Islam says you must share a home only with Muslims. The things to sort out early are alcohol and pork in shared spaces, guests, a place to pray and, where you can, housemates of the same gender.

Living with non-Muslims is fine

Islam encourages kindness and fairness towards people of other faiths who live peacefully beside you:

لَّا يَنْهَىٰكُمُ ٱللَّهُ عَنِ ٱلَّذِينَ لَمْ يُقَـٰتِلُوكُمْ فِى ٱلدِّينِ وَلَمْ يُخْرِجُوكُم مِّن دِيَـٰرِكُمْ أَن تَبَرُّوهُمْ وَتُقْسِطُوٓا۟ إِلَيْهِمْ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُحِبُّ ٱلْمُقْسِطِينَ "Allah does not forbid you from dealing kindly and fairly with those who have neither fought nor driven you out of your homes. Surely Allah loves those who are fair." Quran 60:8

Many converts and students rent flats with non-Muslim friends and get on very well. A shared house is different from a dorm room, because you have more space and more say. See Can I share a dorm room with a non-Muslim?

Alcohol and food in a shared house

You are not responsible for what housemates do in their own rooms, and living under the same roof as someone who drinks is not haram in itself. What you should avoid is taking part or sitting at a gathering where alcohol is being passed around. The Prophet ﷺ said a believer should not sit at a spread where khamr, meaning intoxicating drink, is circulated (Jami at-Tirmidhi 2801). Sensible habits:

  • Ask that drinks stay in their rooms or on their own fridge shelf, and that parties don't take over the living room.
  • Keep your own pots, pans and chopping board for halal food, so there is never any doubt.
  • Ask them not to cook pork or bacon in your cookware.
  • Don't feel you must clean up their bottles, though you can be tidy about shared areas.

Housemates of the opposite gender

This is the part to think about most. The Prophet ﷺ said that no man should be alone with a woman unless she has a mahram, a close relative she can never marry, with her (Sahih Muslim 1341). Sharing a flat with just one housemate of the opposite gender makes that very hard to avoid. A larger house with several people is a grey area, and scholars give different advice. The safest choice is same-gender housemates. For your own situation, ask a trusted local imam. See Can I live in mixed student housing as a Muslim?

Prayer, guests and house rules

Tell your housemates in the first week that you pray five times a day, may fast in Ramadan, and need a quiet corner in your room. Most people are happy to help once they understand. A short chat about guests, noise and cleaning rotas saves problems later. If a housemate's partner stays over often, you can ask politely for notice and keep to your own room. Key points
  • Living with non-Muslim housemates is allowed (Quran 60:8).
  • Avoid sitting where alcohol is passed around (Jami at-Tirmidhi 2801).
  • Keep your own cookware and a separate fridge shelf.
  • Prefer same-gender housemates, and ask an imam about mixed houses.
Tip: Before you sign a lease, meet the current housemates and ask about drinking, parties and guests. It is much easier to choose the right house than to change one later.
