Can I make dua for my enemies to be guided?

Yes, you can make dua for your enemies to be guided, and it's one of the most noble things a Muslim can do. The Prophet ﷺ prayed for the guidance of people who fought him and mocked him. Praying for someone's guidance doesn't mean you have to trust them or stay in harm's way.

The Prophet's example

  • The tribe of Daws. When a Companion complained that Daws had refused Islam and asked the Prophet ﷺ to curse them, he instead said, "O Allah, guide Daws and bring them" (Sahih al-Bukhari 2937).
  • Umar ibn al-Khattab. Before Umar became Muslim he was one of Islam's fiercest opponents. The Prophet ﷺ prayed that Allah would strengthen Islam through Umar or Abu Jahl, whichever was more beloved to Him (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 3681). Umar soon accepted Islam.
  • The people of Ta'if. After they drove him out with stones, the angel of the mountains offered to crush them. He refused, saying he hoped Allah would bring from their descendants people who worship Allah alone (Sahih al-Bukhari 3231).
  • "They do not know." The Prophet ﷺ described a prophet who was beaten by his people and wiped the blood from his face saying, "O Allah, forgive my people, for they do not know" (Sahih al-Bukhari 3477).

Why it's so powerful

Guidance is the best thing anyone can receive. Praying for it for someone who hurt you turns your pain into something good, frees your heart from bitterness, and may change their life. The Quran describes how goodness can transform enmity:

ٱدْفَعْ بِٱلَّتِى هِىَ أَحْسَنُ فَإِذَا ٱلَّذِى بَيْنَكَ وَبَيْنَهُۥ عَدَٰوَةٌ كَأَنَّهُۥ وَلِىٌّ حَمِيمٌ "Repel [evil] by that [deed] which is better; and thereupon the one whom between you and him is enmity [will become] as though he was a devoted friend." Quran 41:34

You still have the right to justice

Islam doesn't force you to pray for your oppressor's guidance. You're allowed to ask Allah for justice against real wrongdoing, within limits. See Can I make dua against someone who hurt me? But choosing guidance is the higher path, and many find it heals them faster.

Praying for someone also doesn't mean you must keep contact, forgive on their timeline, or ignore abuse. See Do I have to forgive someone who abused me as a Muslim?

What to say

  • "O Allah, guide [name] and open their heart to the truth."
  • "O Allah, soften their heart, and soften mine toward them."
  • "O Allah, remove the hatred between us and replace it with good."

This includes non-Muslims who are hostile to you or to Islam. See Can I make dua for my non-Muslim family?

Key points
  • Praying for an enemy's guidance is sunnah and highly virtuous.
  • The Prophet ﷺ prayed for Daws, for Umar and for the people of Ta'if.
  • You may still seek justice, and you don't have to stay near harm.
  • Use simple words; any language is fine.
Tip: If praying for someone feels impossible right now, start with yourself: "O Allah, heal my heart from what they did." Praying for their guidance often becomes easier once the wound begins to close.
