Can I make dua for the whole Ummah?

Yes, you can and should make dua for the whole Ummah. The Quran teaches believers to pray for "our brothers who preceded us in faith," and prophets prayed for all believers. Praying for others in their absence also brings the same good back to you.
The Quran teaches this dua
Allah praises believers who pray not just for themselves but for everyone who came before them:
Prophet Ibrahim prayed, "Our Lord, forgive me and my parents and the believers the Day the account is established" (Quran 14:41), and Prophet Nuh asked forgiveness for "the believing men and believing women" (Quran 71:28). So praying for the entire community of believers, past and present, is a prophetic habit.
Why it matters
- We're one body. The Prophet ﷺ said believers in their love and mercy are like one body: when one part hurts, the whole body responds with sleeplessness and fever (Sahih al-Bukhari 6011).
- It comes back to you. When you pray for a brother or sister in their absence, an angel says, "Ameen, and for you the same" (Sahih Muslim 2732). See Can I make dua for someone without telling them?
- It softens the heart. Praying for Muslims of every race and country removes pride and resentment, exactly what 59:10 asks for.
- It's what you can do. When you see news of war, famine or disaster and feel helpless, dua is real help.
Simple duas you can use
- "Allahummaghfir lil-mu'minina wal-mu'minat, wal-muslimina wal-muslimat" (O Allah, forgive the believing men and women, the Muslim men and women).
- "O Allah, help the oppressed, feed the hungry, heal the sick and protect the refugees among the Muslims."
- "O Allah, unite the hearts of the Muslims and guide us all to the truth."
Any language is fine. See Can I make dua in English? In times of great hardship, the Prophet ﷺ even made special dua in the prayer for Muslims who were suffering, naming them and asking Allah to rescue them.
Don't forget the people near you
Praying for "the Ummah" shouldn't replace praying for the specific people in your life. A good balance is: yourself, your parents and family, people who asked you for dua, then the whole Ummah, and also guidance for non-Muslim friends and relatives. See What are the best times to make dua?
- Praying for all believers is taught in the Quran (59:10, 14:41, 71:28).
- Muslims are like one body; dua is a way to share the pain.
- An angel prays for you to get the same good.
- Balance it with dua for the specific people in your life.
