Yes, you can. There's nothing wrong with asking Allah to let you marry a particular person, as long as the marriage itself would be halal and you're not in a haram relationship with them. Many scholars advise adding "if they are good for me", because you can't see the future. Pair your dua with istikhara and real, halal steps toward marriage.

Why it's allowed

Dua is for anything good and lawful, and marriage is one of the best things in this life. The Prophet ﷺ said: "There is nothing like marriage, for two who love one another" (Sunan Ibn Majah 1847). Having feelings for someone isn't a sin in itself. What matters is what you do with them. See Is it a sin to have a crush on someone as a Muslim?

So you can say, in your own words: "O Allah, if [name] is good for my faith and my life, make it easy for us to marry, and bless our marriage."

Why add "if it's good for me"

You might be sure this person is "the one", but you only see part of the picture. The Quran reminds us:

وَعَسَىٰٓ أَن تُحِبُّوا۟ شَيْـًۭٔا وَهُوَ شَرٌّۭ لَّكُمْ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ يَعْلَمُ وَأَنتُمْ لَا تَعْلَمُونَ "and perhaps you love a thing and it is bad for you. And Allah Knows, while you know not." Quran 2:216

This isn't a weak or doubtful dua. The Prophet ﷺ told us to ask "with determination" (Sahih al-Bukhari 6339), and you can ask firmly for the good while trusting Allah with the details.

Istikhara: asking Allah to choose

For big decisions like marriage, the Prophet ﷺ taught the istikhara prayer: two voluntary rak'ahs followed by a dua asking Allah, if the matter is good for your religion, livelihood and future, to make it happen, and if it is bad, to turn it away from you and you from it (Sahih al-Bukhari 6382). The full dua is long, so read it from an app or the book "Fortress of the Muslim" (Hisn al-Muslim). See What is istikhara and should I pray it before marriage?

What the dua can't replace

  • Halal steps: involve family or a wali, a mosque or trusted friends, rather than secret dating.
  • Their free choice: you can't ask Allah to force someone's heart against their will. Ask that, if it's good, Allah puts love and ease between you.
  • Faith and character: make sure the marriage is valid (a Muslim man may also marry a Christian or Jewish woman) and that they share values in a way you can build a home with. See Should I marry for love or for religion in Islam?
  • Letting go if it closes: if they marry someone else or say no, that is part of the answer.

A good general dua to add is: "Our Lord, grant us from among our wives and offspring comfort to our eyes" (Quran 25:74).

Key points
  • You may ask to marry a specific person.
  • Add "if it's good for me" and pray istikhara.
  • Take halal steps, not secret dating.
  • Accept a closed door as Allah's choice for you.
Tip: Make the dua, then tell a trusted Muslim friend, imam or family member about your interest. Many good marriages start with someone making a respectful introduction.
