Can I make wudu with acrylic or gel nails?

No, according to most scholars, wudu isn't valid while acrylic or gel nails cover your natural nails. They form a waterproof layer, and water must reach every part of the hands, including the nails. Many Muslim women wear them only during their period, or choose water-permeable options instead.
Why water has to reach the nails
Allah commands us to wash our hands up to the elbows in wudu (Quran 5:6). Scholars of all four schools agree that the nails are part of the hands, so a coating that stops water from touching them means part of the limb is left unwashed. The Prophet ﷺ once saw a man who had missed a small spot the size of a nail on his foot and told him, "Go back and perform your wudu well" (Sahih Muslim 243). If a nail-sized dry spot matters, a full set of acrylics does too.
Gel polish, builder gel, dip powder and press-ons glued to the nail all work the same way: they are a solid layer over the nail. Regular nail polish is the same issue. See Can I pray with nail polish on?
What about a small difference of opinion?
A few contemporary scholars have been more lenient for things that are very hard to remove, comparing them to a bandage. Most scholars reject this for cosmetic nails, because they are chosen, not needed for health, and can be removed. The safe and mainstream position is that they must come off before wudu.
Practical options
- Wear them during your period. Since you aren't praying, many women book their nail appointment for the start of their cycle and remove them before their ghusl. See Do I have to pray while on my period?
- Breathable or "halal" polish. Some brands claim water can pass through. Scholars differ on whether these really work, so test or ask a local teacher.
- Henna on the nails is fine, because it stains rather than coats.
- Keep natural nails neat: trimmed, clean and shaped, which is also a sunnah.
If you prayed with them before
If you didn't know the ruling, don't panic. Many scholars say a new Muslim who was unaware is excused for past prayers, while others recommend making them up if you can. From now on, remove them before wudu and keep going. Allah does not burden a soul beyond its ability.
- Acrylic, gel and dip nails block water, so wudu isn't valid over them.
- Nails count as part of the hands that must be washed.
- Wearing them only during your period is a common solution.
- Henna on nails is fine; it doesn't form a layer.
