It depends, and scholars differ. Many say wudu is not valid with eyelash extensions, because the glue coats your natural lashes, which are part of the face that must be washed. Others are more lenient. Strip lashes that you can take off should simply be removed before wudu.

Why the lashes matter

In wudu you wash the whole face, from the hairline to the chin and from ear to ear (Quran 5:6). Scholars agree that the eyelashes and eyebrows are included: water should pass over them. You don't need to open your eyes or get water inside them, but the lashes themselves count as part of the face.

Semi-permanent extensions are glued to each natural lash. The glue forms a layer that water can't pass through, much like nail polish. That's the main reason many scholars say wudu over them isn't valid.

The different views

  • The stricter view (held by many teachers across the four schools today): the glue is a barrier on a part that must be washed, so the extensions must come off before wudu, or not be worn.
  • A more lenient view: some contemporary scholars say the glued area is tiny, and water still runs over the lash line, so they excuse it, similar to small traces of paint or dough that are hard to avoid.
  • A separate issue: the Prophet ﷺ cursed the woman who attaches extra hair to her own (Sahih al-Bukhari 5937). Some scholars apply this to lash extensions, especially those made of real hair or mink, while others allow synthetic lashes. See Can I wear hair extensions as a Muslim woman?

Because the question is new and opinions differ, it's best to follow the scholar or mosque you trust, and to lean towards caution when it comes to the validity of your prayer.

Strip lashes, mascara and lash lifts

  • Strip lashes are easy to remove, so take them off, make wudu and put them back on.
  • Waterproof mascara forms a coating too; remove it before wudu.
  • Lash lifts and tints change the shape or colour without adding a layer, so wudu is fine.

  • Some scholars are lenient; follow a teacher you trust.
