Yes, your wudu is valid with a tattoo. The ink sits under the skin, so it doesn't stop water from touching your body. You don't need to remove old tattoos for wudu, ghusl or prayer to count.

Why tattoos don't block wudu

What makes wudu invalid is a barrier on top of the skin, like nail polish, glue or a thick waterproof cream, because water has to reach the skin itself. A tattoo is different: the pigment is inside the skin, and the surface is just normal skin. Water flows over it like it does over the rest of you, so washing the face, arms and feet over a tattoo is completely fine.

The same goes for ghusl and for praying. A tattoo doesn't make you impure, and you can pray, fast, go to the mosque and read the Quran as normal.

What about new tattoos while they heal?

A fresh tattoo is often covered with a film or ointment for a few days. If washing it would harm the healing skin, the rules for wounds apply: wash around it and wipe over the dressing, or wipe gently over the area. Follow your tattoo artist's or doctor's advice. Do I have to remove my tattoos?

Getting a permanent tattoo is not allowed in Islam: the Prophet ﷺ cursed the one who tattoos and the one who asks for it (Sahih al-Bukhari 5937). But tattoos you got before Islam are forgiven, because "Islam wipes out what came before it" (Sahih Muslim 121). Most scholars say you don't have to remove them, especially if laser removal is painful, costly or risky. Some recommend removal if it's easy and safe. Either way, your wudu and prayers are valid. Temporary and henna tattoos

  • Natural henna stains the skin and leaves no layer, so wudu is fine.
  • Stick-on or "transfer" tattoos sit on top of the skin as a film. Most scholars say peel them off before wudu.
  • Tattoo cover-up makeup that is waterproof should also be removed first.

Key points

  • Wudu, ghusl and prayer are valid with a tattoo.
  • Pre-Islam tattoos are forgiven; removal isn't required by most scholars.
  • Stick-on tattoos form a layer and should come off before wudu.
Tip: If a tattoo reminds you of your past and it bothers you, wear sleeves or a plaster at the mosque if you like, but don't let it stop you from praying. Allah looks at your heart today. Thinking about a Quran tattoo? Read Can I get a Quran verse tattoo?
