Can I miss Friday prayer because of a lecture?

It depends on who you are, but for most adult men the answer is no. Friday prayer (Jumu'ah) is a duty for adult Muslim men who aren't travelling or sick, and an ordinary lecture usually isn't a valid excuse to miss it. Women, travellers and boys who haven't reached puberty aren't required to attend. If you truly can't go, you pray Zuhr instead.
Who has to attend
The Prophet ﷺ said Friday prayer in congregation is a duty for every Muslim, "with four exceptions; a slave, a woman, a boy, and a sick person" (Sunan Abi Dawud 1067). Scholars also exempt travellers. So if you're a female student, Jumu'ah is optional for you: you can attend and it replaces Zuhr, or pray Zuhr wherever you are.
Why a lecture usually isn't an excuse
The verse tells believers to leave even their business when the call for Jumu'ah comes, so a regular class is treated the same way. The Prophet ﷺ also warned that someone who leaves the Friday prayer for three Fridays "on account of slackness" will have a stamp printed on his heart (Sunan Abi Dawud 1052). It's a serious matter, not just a nice extra.
That said, some contemporary scholars accept a real, one-off hardship as an excuse, for example a final exam that can't be moved or something that would cause you to fail the course. This is for genuine necessity, not because a lecture is inconvenient to miss.
Practical ways to make it work
- Plan your timetable: when choosing classes, avoid Friday midday slots if you can. This solves most problems before they start.
- Look for multiple Jumu'ah times: some campuses and city mosques hold more than one Jumu'ah. Ask the MSA or Islamic Society.
- Ask your lecturer: Jumu'ah, with travel, often takes 45 to 60 minutes. Ask to leave early or arrive late, and offer to catch up from slides or recordings.
- Use recordings: if lectures are recorded, attending Jumu'ah and watching later may be the easiest fix.
- At high school: some schools let Muslim students attend a nearby mosque or hold a short Jumu'ah on site. A parent can help ask.
If you miss it
If you miss Jumu'ah, pray four rak'ahs of Zuhr as usual. If you missed it without a good reason, sincerely ask Allah's forgiveness and plan better for next week. One mistake doesn't define you; making it a habit is what to avoid.
