No, not if you're an adult man who has to attend Jumu'ah. A match, training session or tournament isn't a valid excuse to miss Friday prayer, and watching a game on TV certainly isn't. Women, children, travellers and the sick don't have to attend. In practice, an earlier or later Jumu'ah slot, or a quick word with your coach, usually solves the clash.

Why Jumu'ah comes first

Allah tells believers to leave even their business when the Friday call is made:

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ إِذَا نُودِىَ لِلصَّلَوٰةِ مِن يَوْمِ ٱلْجُمُعَةِ فَٱسْعَوْا۟ إِلَىٰ ذِكْرِ ٱللَّهِ وَذَرُوا۟ ٱلْبَيْعَ ۚ ذَٰلِكُمْ خَيْرٌ لَّكُمْ إِن كُنتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ "O you who have believed, when [the adhan] is called for the prayer on the day of Jumu'ah [Friday], then proceed to the remembrance of Allah and leave trade. That is better for you, if you only knew." Quran 62:9

If work has to wait for Jumu'ah, a game does too. The Prophet ﷺ warned, "He who leaves the Friday prayer (continuously) for three Friday on account of slackness, Allah will print a stamp on his heart" (Sunan Abi Dawud 1052, graded hasan sahih). See Is Friday prayer compulsory?

Who has to attend

The Prophet ﷺ said Friday prayer in congregation is a duty for every Muslim except "a slave, a woman, a boy, and a sick person" (Sunan Abi Dawud 1067). Scholars add travellers. So:

  • Boys under puberty playing a Friday youth match don't sin, though it's good to start the habit early.
  • Women aren't required to attend, so a women's Friday fixture isn't a problem.
  • Away games involving real travel can count as travel for the team, depending on the distance.

Practical ways to make it work

  • Find another slot: many city mosques run two or three Jumu'ahs, for example at 12:30, 1:30 and 2:30. In winter, Jumu'ah is early enough to fit before most afternoon games.
  • Talk to your coach: explain it's about 45 minutes once a week. Many coaches will let you arrive a little late or warm up separately.
  • Move casual games: five-a-side with friends can easily start after Jumu'ah.
  • Watching: pray first, catch the highlights later.

It also helps to know what to expect at the mosque, so you can time things. See What happens at Friday prayer?

If you've already missed it

Pray four rakat of Dhuhr as normal, ask Allah's forgiveness, and plan ahead so it doesn't become a habit. Lectures and exams raise similar questions. See Can I miss Friday prayer because of a lecture?

Key points
  • Adult men shouldn't skip Jumu'ah for a match or training.
  • Women, children, travellers and the sick are excused.
  • Use another Jumu'ah slot or speak to your coach.
  • If you miss it, pray Dhuhr and make a plan for next time.
Tip: Save the Jumu'ah times of two or three mosques near your training ground in your phone. When a fixture lands on a Friday, you'll know your options in seconds.
