Yes, most contemporary scholars allow it, mainly out of need. Almost everyone needs a bank account to be paid, rent a home and pay bills. A conventional current account that pays and charges no interest is widely accepted by scholars, while others recommend an Islamic bank where one is available. The key is to avoid earning or paying riba (interest).

Why the issue comes up

Interest is forbidden in Islam. The Quran says:

Fear Allah, and give up outstanding interest if you are [true] believers." Quran 2:278

The Prophet ﷺ cursed the one who takes interest and the one who pays it, along with the one who records it and the two witnesses (Sahih Muslim 1598). A bank is built around lending at interest, so many Muslims wonder whether they may use one at all. See Is Islamic banking just interest with another name?

What scholars say

Scholars generally explain a basic current account as money kept safe for you. You are not lending to the bank with a promise of return, and you are not borrowing. Two views exist:

  • Allowed out of need: many contemporary scholars permit a conventional current account because modern life, wages and bills depend on it, as long as you take no interest.
  • Prefer an Islamic bank: some scholars advise choosing an Islamic institution where possible, because even a safe-keeping account lets the bank use your money in interest-based lending.

You can follow the view of a trusted scholar or your local imam.

How to use a regular account safely

  • Pick a current (checking) account that pays no interest, or ask whether you can turn the interest off.
  • Avoid overdrafts and any account feature that charges interest. Set alerts so your balance does not go below zero.
  • Do not keep any interest you receive. Give it away to the poor or public causes, without expecting reward.
  • Do not hold large savings in interest-paying products. Look at halal ways of saving instead.

If a bank pays you interest by default, it is better to remove it than to ignore it. See What do I do with interest money from my bank account?

Look for alternatives where you can

Some areas have Islamic banks or accounts. Other options include credit unions and prepaid cards, depending on where you live. Check the terms carefully, because a label is not enough. See Is a credit union halal?

If you only have a regular bank nearby, using one for essentials while avoiding interest is a sensible and widely accepted choice.

Key points
  • Most scholars allow a regular current account out of need.
  • Avoid earning or paying interest (Quran 2:278; Sahih Muslim 1598).
  • Do not use an interest-charging overdraft, and give away any interest earned.
  • Choose an Islamic option if one is available and practical.
Tip: When you open the account, ask for a basic account with no interest and no overdraft. It is easier to start that way than to fix it later.
